What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tooling Manager position at Step2 Discovery LLC?
SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Review new parts (3D CAD) requiring injection, blow or roto tooling with the Project Engineer, create RFQ’s, send RFQ’s to vendors and track incoming quotes.
- Review quotes for accuracy, and once approved for release, place tooling orders with vendors and generate Material Requisitions (for PO’s).
- Review 2D & 3D tool designs and provide a tool design summary for each new tool. Approve final tool design for build.
- Monitor and track the tool build process to ensure tools are delivered on time, on budget and meet design specifications.
- Attend initial tool sampling to evaluate tool function and performance to quote. Provide feedback and suggestions to improve performance and evaluate parts for tooling issues (flash, PL mismatch, stress marks, etc.)
- Communicate tool sample results with Project Engineers and provide sample parts for review and testing. Complete and file a Mold Sample Review form for each new tool.
- Review sample parts with Project Engineers after form, fit and function testing to determine if any tool changes are needed. Follow up with tool shops on needed revisions and repeat this process until parts are ready to be submitted for First Article Submission. The Tooling Engineer will notify the molder to submit First Articles to Step2.
- Maintain Tooling Asset List.
- Maintain and update Roto, Injection and Blow Tooling Specifications.
- Look for cost savings opportunities.
- Production Tooling repairs: Respond to molders and internal departments to investigate issues with production tooling, identify solutions and/or needed repairs, obtain RFQ’s, issue PO’s and oversee repairs, review sample parts, obtain approvals from Safety, QC and Engineering, notify molders to submit First Articles, and track tool repair spending for each calendar year.
- Manage all aspects of the Mold Maintenance department including, but not limited to, personnel, workload and priorities, time keeping, attendance, performance reviews, and maintaining a department budget.
- Other responsibilities and projects may be assigned as necessary.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma.
Hands on experience, or an apprenticeship in an injection mold tool shop.
5 years related work experience that includes managing personnel.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be highly experienced with injection molding and injection tooling construction.
- Must have a thorough working knowledge of tool grade materials and cutting techniques.
- Three or more years’ experience in managing technical personnel and complex activities.
- Must be proficient in MS office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
- Team player with a “can do” attitude to overcoming obstacles and finding solutions.
- Must have excellent time management, project management and organizational skills.
- Must be a self-starter with leadership qualities and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must have ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have the ability to think and move quickly in making good sound business and technical decisions based on facts and experience.
- Must be a problem solver.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Responsible for New Product Development (NPD) tooling: obtaining quotes, reviewing and approving tool designs, monitoring the tool build process, maintaining delivery timelines and budgets. Also responsible for maintenance and repairs of existing production tooling. Responsibilities to also include managing of Mold Maintenance personnel and maintaining department budgets.
