What can you expect? As the Air-Track Drill Operator, you must be highly skilled in drilling and/or blasting operations and perform general construction duties as part of the STG construction crew in extreme Alaskan conditions. You will perform trade for long hours, day after day, often in adverse conditions, to complete the project at hand. You will closely with a variety of other trades and are expected to take direction from the Project Foreman or other members of the Project Management team but also expected to take initiative and always keep busy with productive work while on the jobsite. How will you do it? Drill or bore holes in rock for blasting, grouting, anchoring, or building foundations. Select and attach drill bits and drill rods, adding more rods as hole depths increase, and changing drill bits and rods as needed. Perform routine maintenance and upgrade work on machines and equipment, such as replacing parts, building up drill bits and lubricating machinery. Operate controls to stabilize machines and to position and align drills. Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, water injection, and downward pressure, according to soil, rock or concrete being drilled. Accurately locate and maintain plumb or battered hole angles and straightness depending on application. Collaring holes/ mudding down-hole cracks to maintain loadable/groutable hole conditions. Operate machines to flush earth cuttings or to blow dust from holes. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance. Perform physical labor that requires considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsibility to report any incident, situation or activity that may affect the company’s ability to operate safely, ethically, and profitably to company Risk Manager. Application of a versatile construction skill set to assist other trades to meet project needs. Act as a team lead and mentor less experienced laborers. Proficiency with hand and power tools. Cooking and cleaning as necessary in the field quarters. Submitting all necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner. Keeping any required certifications up to date by law or company policy. Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Abilities you must have to be successful: All around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in construction field Knowledge of and proficiency with air drills, compressors, and other hand and power tools, including ability to maintain and operate them. Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines and general time management. Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule. Ability to work productively under pressure. Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications. Ability to work as a team player with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner as well as independently. Ability to properly wear PPE and abide by company and project-specific safety policies. Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale. Ability to participate in group meetings. Who is STG Inc. looking for? Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Prior work experience in construction industry, specifically with drilling and/or blasting operations in rural arctic environments. Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of STG’s Driving Policy. Ability to travel to remote places for work related purposes (up to 100% of time) and work a flexible schedule is required. Ability to pass a background screening drug testing. Preferred Qualifications: State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness as an Explosives Handler preferred. Knowledge of remote Alaska logistics and construction practices strongly preferred. Prior experience in Alaska’s rural construction industry is preferred.
