What are the responsibilities and job description for the Exhibit Designer position at Studio Tectonic?
Exhibit Designer role is primarily responsible for the visualization and design documentation for 3D exhibit elements for museum, national park, zoo, and the wide-ranging informal education facilities for which Studio Tectonic provides exhibit planning and design. This role will work closely with designers, writers, fabricators, project managers, architects, and general contractors. It will work in support of the design leadership.
This position requires a breadth and depth of both museum and architectural design experience, and an innate ability to develop fun and creative design solutions. The position is full-time remote, however potential candidates must be located or relocate to within one-hour of Boulder, Colorado for as-needed in-person meetings and servicing our Rocky Mountain clients. Travel to and from studio meetings is the responsibility of the candidate. Travel is expected and will vary in frequency depending on client locations and phase of design.

Key areas of the exhibit designer role that are essential to the position:
1. Design Documentation
- Generation of detailed design drawings and 3D models
- Production and reading detailed drawing packages for all design phases, both inward for contactor/fabrication drawing review and outward as client communication tools for review.
- Incorporation of (1) Fabrication methodologies within design work, and (2) Ability to follow and/or create detailed specifications for all designed elements
- Integrate ADA and universal design principles into all elements
2. Tracking and organization of exhibit components
- Implementation of organizational systems to track details of exhibit components including but not limited to casework, artifacts, graphic panels, media elements, fixtures furnishings and equipment, props, finishes, hardware, electrical and structural coordinations
3. Team Collaboration and big picture thinking
- Responsibility for synthesizing narrative story lines and translating them into 3D experiential engagements. In addition to being a creative designer, this role requires an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of work for and within the museum environment, and the specific content and goals that are unique to each project.
Essential Skills
- Passionate interest and demonstrated work in cultural, natural, and social history storytelling through informal learning environments.

- Macintosh operating platforms
- 3D CAD software (Vectorworks and Sketchup preferred)
- 3D rendering using a variety of digital tools for developing visualizations for clients
- Ability to communicate with hand sketches / quick exploratory visuals
- Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel)
- Database tracking, searching and management, largely in Filemaker Pro
- Project time tracking
- Highly organized file management and attention to detail
The ideal candidate will have experience in the design and development process of exhibitions, a deep interest in museums and educational environments. Working experience with exhibit project phasing is required. 3-6 years of experience is desired either in museums or in a design consultant capacity.
