Job description

The primary purpose of your job position is to plan, develop, organize and direct Occupational Therapy Services in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree and current state certification appropriate the department staff position qualifications.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Advocate of team concept, with willingness to contribute and be supportive.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate efficiency.
  • Annual physical, including TB and optional Hep B test offered through the company.
  • Seek maximum performance levels in helping assigned patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers and writes evaluations of assigned patients in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
  • Interpretation of department’s policies and procedures to employees, residents, visitors, government agencies, etc.
  • Maintains timely and accurate patient records and reports.
  • Provides consultation in areas such as environmental design, adaptive equipment, proper positioning of patients to prevent contractures and splinting, as well as to agencies such as local schools, nursing homes, visiting nursing associations, and general hospitals.
  • Designs and administers treatment programs to increase patient levels of functioning. Instructs patients in self care and home management skills. Trains patients in the use of upper-extremity prosthetic devices to resume previous daily routines. Participates in home assessments.
  • Provides therapy to include but not limited to treatment for neurological integration; administration of sensor-motor integration treatment techniques and visual retraining programs. Uses activities to increase developmental levels of patients. Designs and provides individualized therapy for adult learning-disabled patients.
  • Uses therapeutic exercises and activities to improve or maintain strength, range of motion, and fine-motor coordination. Designs and fabricates splints, slings, adaptive equipment and positioning devices to meet the needs of each patient and/or their families.
  • Administers treatment programs to traumatic brain-injured patients. Uses activities to improve judgment skills, reality orientation, and organizational skills.
  • Provides prevention therapy to maintain functional skills; instructs patients in energy conservation, joint protection, safety techniques for sensory loss, and transferring and visual field deficits; instructs patients’ families in personal care for patients, especially proper transfer techniques to avoid back strain.
  • Administers prevocational program to prepare patients to return to or enter a work setting. Provides activities to assess patients’ organizational skills, attention spans, cognitive abilities, coordination (fine and gross-motor), and adaptive equipment needs.
  • Designs home programs and instructs patients and families in carrying out such programs.
  • Participates in patient support groups with other team members.
  • Keeps daily attendance, monthly reports, and case records on the caseload assigned.
  • Communicates with allied professions regarding individual cases.
  • Establishes daily therapy work plan.
  • Assists in department housekeeping and inventory control.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop, attend and participate in scheduled training and educational classes provided by the facility. This includes staff meetings.
  • Assume the responsibility for maintaining your professional competence through participation in programs of continuing education (ie: seminars, training programs, etc.)
  • Participates in quality assurance programs.
  • May assist and supervise certified occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy aides, and occupational therapy students in patient treatment.

SAFETY

  • Familiarity with possible exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensures that staff follows established safety precautions, such as keeping floor dry and reporting spill immediately.
  • Keeps supplies, equipment, etc necessary to provide a safe and comfortable work environment in order.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility along with personal integrity. Ability to work effectively with residents, families, personnel, and other support agencies.
  • Must meet general health requirements, which includes a health evaluation form.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such a weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
