ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
Under the supervision of the Practice and/or Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director, the Phlebotomist will perform quality assurance following all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical areas of the laboratory, as well as device inspections for quality specimen collection. The Phlebotomist will follow all Sun Life, state, federal, CLIA, and The Joint Commission requirements and regulations. The Phlebotomist will ensure that patients and internal customers are serviced in a professional and timely manner. The Phlebotomist will maintain cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Communicate and assist patients in a professional and courteous manner.
- Assures patient waiting times are in the best interest of the patient and the flow of the draw room is timely and professional.
- Verify and complete orders. Identify the patient and confirm the correct patient record.
- Resolve orders in the EHR and LIS.
- Complete appropriate laboratory forms documenting tests performed and noting the diagnoses correlating to tests performed.
- Complete lab requisition forms and produce appropriate labels for forms and specimen container(s).
- Obtain specimen(s) from patient of all ages per lab requisition and testing lab requirements, assuring the quality of operations.
- Evaluate each request for a laboratory test to identify proper number and type of containers necessary to facilitate distribution to appropriate laboratory sections and reference labs.
- Instructs patient on the collection of urine samples, tolerance tests, and stool samples.
- Process specimens per testing lab requirements in a timely manner.
- Perform CLIA Waived and Point – of – Care testing per Laboratory Procedure Manual guidelines.
- Creates slides for manual differentials when necessary.
- Perform quality control appropriate for the testing performed and document on the appropriate log. Report to Medical Technologist or Laboratory Manager when result(s) are outside its limits.
- Review logs for clerical accuracy, clinical indications, and prepare for monthly audits.
- Consult with Medical Technologist or Laboratory Manager regarding difficult tests or abnormal findings.
- Follow department preventative maintenance schedules.
- Document instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken.
- Notify Medical Technologist or Laboratory Manager of equipment failure and document the problem, steps taken, and final corrective actions.
- Recognize, analyze, and take corrective action to resolve instrument or clinical problems.
- Report unresolved instrument or clinical problems to the Laboratory Manager.
- Clean laboratory glassware, refrigerators/freezers, centrifuges, and equipment by maintenance protocol and as necessary.
- Complete LIS tasks: Work in Progress, Reference Lab Match Queue, etc.
- Check specimen send-outs, remediating and documenting any errors found.
- Participate in laboratory continuing education programs.
- Keep work area neat, clean, and maintain adequate laboratory supplies.
- Assist with training phlebotomy clinical students from affiliated schools.
- Available to cover at other SLFHC locations when needed.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned or requested by the Laboratory Manager.

REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated competencies in dealing with all age groups including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
- Cash handling
- Knowledge of basic bookkeeping principles
- Ability to work under stressful situations
- Computer literate
- Bilingual preferred and may be required based on patient needs
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED
- Medical Assistant certification (CMA or RMA) required
- If not CMA or RMA, employee must achieve within 90-days of employment.
- Preferred 2-5 year’s experience as a Medical Assistant
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required
