Position SummaryThe Chief of University Police will maintain the standards of the University Police Department as a model for collegiate law enforcement agencies. The Chief of University Police will be a skilled change agent, effective staff and student advocate, a committed and collaborative member of the Student and Campus Life management team, and a leader possessing a broad institutional viewpoint. As one of six administrators directly reporting to the Vice President for Student and Campus Life, the Chief of University Police is responsible for ensuring that SUNY Geneseo students, faculty, and staff are free to learn and teach in a safe and secure campus environment and for helping each member of the College community assume responsibility for the safety and security of themselves and their fellow community members.
The Chief of University Police will supervise a staff that includes: Assistant Chief of University Police, Inspector, Parking and Transportation Administrator, four first-line supervisors, ten police officers, four communications specialists, an administrative assistant, and an office assistant. The Chief will also maintain a plan for organizational evolution in collaboration with College leadership, refine the department’s training program, develop and submit budget recommendations, monitor, verify and reconcile fund expenditures and devise methods to improve the overall quality of policing at SUNY Geneseo.
The ideal candidate will have leadership experience with departmental operations including but not limited to record retention, property and evidence control, working with labor unions, and a high degree of integrity, innovation, and management skills. Ideally, this experience will have taken place in a higher education setting allowing the candidate to have a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary college student and campus law enforcement.

Required QualificationsAmong the requirements for the role are expertise in consensus building, customer service, community policing, personnel management, discipline and labor relations, and fiscal management. In addition, the candidate must possess:
- Current NYS certification as a sworn police officer
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public relations or related field
- Valid NYS driver’s license
- A record of progressive leadership and management responsibility in a campus law enforcement agency as a supervisor, investigator, or campus law enforcement administrator, recognized by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a certified agency in New York State.
- Experience in managing or supervising patrol operations of a police department
- Experience in emergency management and planning
- Experience in developing and managing a department-wide law enforcement training program
- Demonstrated abilities in managing internal and criminal investigations
- Experience in records retention and management systems
- Experience in higher education policing for a culturally diverse campus
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Current NYS police instructor certification
- Incident Command Level 400 certification
- Accreditation Program Manager training through the NYS Law Enforcement Accreditation Program
License/Certification

Supervision ExercisedThis position directly supervises the Assistant Chief, Inspector, Parking and Transportation Administrator, Administrative Assistant are direct reports to the Chief of Police. Four first-line supervisor, ten police officer and four dispatcher lines are also the responsibility of the Chief of Police although they report to the Assistant Chief for most matters.
