Job Summary:
The Genetic Counselor works in consultation with the physicians at the Regional Perinatal Center and with referring physicians to plan, develop, and implement clinical practice and research in the area of clinical human genetics. In addition, will work with other departments as the need for genetic counseling expands. The Genetic Counselor's primary responsibility is providing counseling to families and adults in the area of clinical human genetics. Conducts and extracts information from literature reviews to assist in developing a diagnostic plan or workup. Analyzes and interprets information obtained from the patient, medical records, and current available resource information. This involves the assessment of patient pedigrees, a review of medical, physical, and psychosocial status, dysmorphology assessments, interpreting genetic laboratory and diagnostic tests. Serves as a resource of information for referring physicians. Provides comprehensive teaching of patient or families regarding the etiology, inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, genetic testing, test results and their implications for the individual and the family members. Provides crisis and grief counseling when needed and makes appropriate referrals. Responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for the community physicians as well as interdisciplinary staff at UH. The Genetic Counselor has a role in case management as they assist in making referrals to sub specialists, community services, resources and identifying financial coverage and authorization of services based upon individual patient needs. Interventions involve a disciplined application of professional knowledge related to genetic technologies, theories and resources for a broad range of problems. This position provides genetic counseling at a specialized level of practice.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree conferred by a Genetic Counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABCG) required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Board Certified, or eligible, by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) preferred. Experience in pre-conceptual and prenatal counseling preferred. *Salary/title level commensurate with qualifications.
Work Days:
Monday - Friday, Day hours.
