What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machine Operator - 2nd Shift position at Superior Die Set?
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Uses various machines on shop floor including vertical & horizontal milling machines, lathes, grinding machines, water jet, honing machines, power saws, and other equipment as required. Ability to read calipers and micrometers.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1) Sets up, adjusts and operates vertical and horizontal milling machines to perform diversified milling operations largely on standardized work where setup instructions, tooling and operational methods are available, requiring a practical knowledge of machining practices and techniques, setup and operating skills plus varied milling experience.
2) Plans operational sequences to select tooling, arbors and spindle speeds, table feed rates, work holding devices, blocking, support and clamping arrangements for work of irregular contour; select special attachments, dividing heads, etc., for unusual and difficult operations.
3) Mounts and fastens milling cutters; sets arbor speed; aligns and secures holding fixtures or material clamping arrangements. Adjusts table to orient work and cutters; set table feeds and travel stops; sets arbor support and trusses as indicated.
4) Uses single purpose attachments or pre-set indexing devices and dividing heads as directed. Works from part drawings, specifications, setup and operating instructions.
5) Varies setup instructions within limitations of standard procedures or as approved by supervising Foreman to compensate for unusual cutting conditions attributable to varying material characteristics.
6) Uses scale, micrometers, protractor, height verniers, indicators, etc., to set up, operate and check work.
7) Proceeds with minimum supervision and direction; instructions and guidance provided on unusual work, setup and operating difficulties. Work is subject to process and final inspection and check.
8) Participate and contribute to continuous improvement culture including Kaizen initiatives. Maintain required quality and cleanliness standards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires knowledge of machining fundamentals and basic operating skills, shop arithmetic, blueprint reading and measuring procedures which may be acquired through two years of vocational or high school education supplemented by a short-term on-the-job training period plus six to twelve months of applied machine shop experience.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
100% standing; requires mobility to be able to stand, walk, change position, lift, move and position average to heavy weight materials (50 lbs.); able to read blueprints and precision measuring or technical equipment; able to utilize good manual dexterity for performing various job assignments; good judgment in interpreting quality standards and operating techniques.
