What are the responsibilities and job description for the Workforce Development Specialist position at Surry Community College?

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the Surry-Yadkin Works high school pre-apprentices, and act as the liaison between the educational, economic, and business/industry partnership for Surry and Yadkin Counties. The Workforce Development Specialist (WDS) will work with business and industry to determine employment needs and coordinate efforts to place student pr-apprentices in work-based learning experiences such as internships and apprenticeships. This is an 11- month position; August-June.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The WDS will work with the Surry-Yadkin Works Executive Director and SYW Team to facilitate all aspects of the project goals to place students in intentional work-based learning experiences based on industry needs. This will include facilitating and coordinating business/industry/education meetings, overseeing recruitment and retention (both of students and business partners), developing relationships with students and parents to guide students to success, and coordinating and overseeing support services. The WDS will develop relationships with students and parents to guide students to the successful completion of their high school diploma, their work-based learning experiences, and career-ready credentials. Most importantly, the WDS will serve as a coordinator between the local businesses, economic development, the community college, and the high schools to establish clear lines of communication, to develop goals and objectives to be met as established by the business partners, and to develop work-based learning placements. The WDS will also plan and implement programs for public school partners that align with the Surry-Yadkin Works Mission Statement.

The WDS will oversee the project to ensure the creation of a successful and sustainable model of work-based learning placement in the vision of Surry-Yadkin Works which may include grant writing for future funding.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledgeable of secondary and post-secondary education and training
  • Knowledgeable of high school to college pathways
  • Knowledgeable of business and industry needs
  • Ability to facilitate and coordinate individual, small group, and large group meetings with minimal assistance, business meetings, advisory meetings, student/parent meetings
  • Ability to balance responsibilities between several school districts, multiple high schools, the community college, and business/industry partners
  • Skilled in developing relations and partnerships with multiple stakeholder groups

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business correspondence and reports.

  • Ability to effectively present information to management, students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to apply and understand standard mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and other mathematical functions as appropriate to the division’s need for such skill.

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (or equivalent demonstrated experience/ability):

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.
  • Ability to independently and effectively organize and manage projects.
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in academic related field. Educational administrative or other relevant leadership experience required, career development or related experience preferred, working knowledge of business/industry needs. Applicant must be well-organized and a self-starter with ability to take initiative.
