BUS DRIVER
DEFINITION
Under supervision of the Transportation Supervisor and the Business Manager, performs routing operation of school vehicles to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions of this classification are members of the school transportation team. Duties of the position in this classification are performed under supervision. However, considerable use of independent judgment is required in matters not having established rules, policies or procedures. The ability of organizing others and acting effectively during emergency conditions are required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Obeys all traffic laws.
Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
Maintains discipline when students are on the bus.
Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
Keeps assigned bus clean.
Keeps to assigned schedule.
Checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects.
Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
Discharges students only at authorized stops.
Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
Transports only authorized students.
Reports all accidents and completed required reports.
Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
EDUCATION
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of all school bus driving qualifications.
Ability to drive large buses safely with skill and efficiency.
Ability to manage students, maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
Must possess an Oregon School Bus Drivers License [CDL-class B with passenger & air brakes endorsement]
Must possess or obtain a First Aid Card.
Completion of requirements as set forth by the Oregon Department of Education {OAR 581-053-0006} and Board of Directors of School District #130.
Meet Physical Examination Requirements of OAR 581-053-0006.
I.E. -- Partial physical requirements of OAR 581-053-006: 7(A) (i) No impairment of use of foot, leg, finger, hand or arm, or other structural defect or limitation, likely to interfere with safe driving or other responsibilities of a school bus driver. Drivers may be required to demonstrate ability to: open and close a manually operated bus entrance door control with a force of at least 30 pounds; climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 1/2 inches; operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly; have a reaction time of 3/4 of a second or less from the throttle to the brake control; carry or drag a 125 pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less; depress a brake pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 90 pounds; depress a clutch pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 40 pounds unless operating an automatic transmission; exit from an emergency door opening of 24 x 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in ten seconds or less. Drivers must be physically able to open all emergency exits installed in any school bus they drive;
(ii) No mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or disability likely to interfere with safe driving or other responsibilities of a school bus driver.
(B) Visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye either with or without corrective lenses and a binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes either with or without corrective lenses. Form field of vision shall not be less than a total of 140 degrees and the ability to distinguish colors red, green, and yellow. Drivers requiring corrective lenses shall wear properly prescribed lenses at all times while driving;
(C) Hearing. First perceives a forced whispered voice in the better ear not less than five feet with or without the use of a hearing aid, or if tested by the use of an audiometric device, applicant shall not have average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard Z24.5-1951. Drivers requiring a hearing aid shall wear such properly operating aid at all times while driving;
