Avondale Global Gateway is a 254-acre former shipyard on Mile 108 of the Mississippi River, redeveloped into a multimodal logistics terminal with significant warehousing and storage capabilities. T. Parker Host acquired Avondale in 2018 from Huntington Ingalls Industries and has since reestablished its iconic prominence into a model of ingenuity. Avondale Global Gateway is a historic property with four docks and over one mile of waterfront, uniquely accommodating ships, barges, rail and trucks. This facility offers immediate access to the regional and interstate highway system and is positioned at the interchange of six Class I railroads, creating the ability for cargo to be distributed in all directions.

Position Summary: In this position, the team member will execute operations safely and efficiently. Duties will include stevedoring operations of loading/unloading vessels and will require the employee to take an overall leadership position with assuring that operations are meeting or exceeding expectations. Understanding the safe and efficient loading/discharging of marine vessels and prioritizing this activity. Providing and offering leadership and training to operators in a team setting. Operate as a member of a team, responsible for coordinating information flow between each crew member and Vessel Supervisor. This position requires the ability to work closely with multiple team members and sometimes with minimal supervision.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Oversee general vessel operations as directed by Supervisor and scheduled.
- Ensure all Marine equipment is in good working order and fueled prior to work start
- Monitor discharging/loading operations to ensure that instructions are followed, deadlines are met, and schedules are maintained.
- Enforce operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety.
- Ensure that immediate working area is safe to work and that all team members assigned are wearing required and appropriate PPE for the days operation
- Assist with leadership, training and monitoring of less-experienced employees.
- Identify issues and concerns, resolve and/or make recommendations to Supervisor.
- Communicate with Supervisor as needed during shift
- Operate heavy machinery including but not limited to skid steers, bulldozers, loaders and forklifts
- Any other duties as assigned by Supervisor or management
Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience in cargo handling and operating heavy machinery
- Ship or barge loading and unloading experience preferred
- Working knowledge of health and safety procedures
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Physical Requirements:
- Physical work in most weather conditions and around heavy machinery, which can be dangerous at times.
- Shift work which may require early mornings, evenings and weekends.
- Ability to lift up to 75lbs.
- Must meet “fit for duty” requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test)
