Job Description Position Overview The Lead Engineer will be responsible for supporting the technical oversight of activity on the product and provide technical leadership on R&D and customer funder projects. An excellent communicator and team player they will be highly proactive in working with members of the wider team providing coaching, mentoring and guidance to support skills development. This role covers Magnetron products including Linac, Marine and HF classes. Understanding design requirements across the product applications, the Lead Engineer will ensure pragmatic approach to product design, manufacturing solutions and always adopt sound vacuum engineering principles. They will be working with other experts across the various technical domains and with other team members through all phases of the project lifecycle to lead the development through to completion. Main Accountabilities Defining technical requirements for all aspects of product design, manufacture, and test. Carrying out the design and evaluation of new products/components to meet requirements. Identifying improvement opportunities and eliminating failure mechanisms, using a structured engineering approach. Support engineering and business functions to ensure technical product requirements are understood. Technical sign off for new or improved product designs with consideration for technical, commercial, and operational requirements. Lead technical progress reviews in alignment with governance processes. Clearly communicates technical status’ to business stakeholders and leadership. Leads project defining activity working with Project Managers and other engineering disciplines to define work package breakdown (cost, schedule) Identifies IPR/patent issues and opportunities ensuring these are assessed and drives raising of claims as required Provide coaching to engineers, product managers and marketing specialists. Delegate for the Product Design Authority Essential Experience & Skills Proven knowledge and experience in engineering design and delivery of complex structures. Understanding and application of at least one technical discipline (Electrical/Electronic engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Microwave engineering, Material science etc.) Experience in leadership of multi-discipline engineering teams. Use of structured analysis of failure mechanisms using tools such as FMEA and strong problem-solving skills. People management or leadership to relevant KPI’s Excellent networking and interpersonal skills. Some experience in a customer facing role. Self-motivated and driven to succeed. Computer literate – Word, Excel, PowerPoint Technical qualification and experience in a technology organisation. Must be minimum SC cleared Desirable Experience Vacuum product processing techniques Knowledge of microwave principles including test & measurement techniques Working knowledge in one or more of the following; High-power RF/microwave components Accelerator systems High voltage modulators and systems Magnetron design, including practical experience of architecture, processing & test. Knowledge of applications such as radar and radiotherapy systems. Project management - able to manage projects/work packages Experience of providing input into technical bids and proposals.
