Mechanical engineers on our engineering team don't just design batteries- we ship them! The role requires strong fundamentals, a passion to push the boundaries of technology and the tenacity to ensure the success of your creations. Our product requirements push the limits of physical possibility, demanding extreme attention detail and the highest standard of performance, quality and manufacturability. Our team drives collaboration with many engineering groups- team players only. Tesla moves quickly, so being self-motivated and disciplined is critical. You must be passionate, but direction changes quickly, so you must also be resilient. Our team is responsible for the performance, safety, reliability, and scalability of every automotive HV battery product at Tesla!

  • Drive complex subsystem from design concept through launch and production ramp
  • Develop and introduce new technologies that unlock step changes in product metrics (performance, cost, mass)
  • Create methodologies and documentation which positively influence current and future projects, lead relentless improvements to existing products
  • Provide technical leadership / mentorship / design review for less-experienced employees
  • Specification definition (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing)
  • Own basic testing and analysis; supporting advanced testing and analysis
  • Root cause production-critical test failures and manufacturing problems
  • Build collaborative relationships with other Tesla teams (manufacturing, testing, NPI, supply chain, etc.)
  • Written & live reporting up to minimum director level, represent own work and work of others to company leadership
  • Travel to support production launch and ramp (supplier visits, Tesla factories, etc.)
  • May formally manage a small team (up to 5 engineers)
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and electronics
  • Quick, accurate intuition built from in-depth modeling experience
  • Ability to translate product requirements into system requirements, turning vague or subjective goals into clear and quantitative requirements
  • Capable of initiating and leading task forces of large scope and duration
  • Excellent technical collaboration and teamwork skills- ability to debate respectfully
  • Desire to own large scope and work hard- we have small teams and fast timelines
  • Demonstrated ability to ship products- from CAD design through build, test, validation
  • Knack for completing work autonomously, even with infrequent management guidance / inquiry
  • Extensive experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, heat treating, adhesives
  • Extensive experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated
  • Extensive experience defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data
  • Detail-oriented personality with top-tier documentation and reporting skills
  • Mastery over CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 experience a plus but not mandatory
