JOB SUMMARY
The Lead Mechanic is responsible for supervising a technician (mechanic) team responsible for preventive maintenance/repair of a fleet and providing direction to technicians to ensure that all repairs/maintenance to equipment (trucks -- diesel and alternate fuel, containers and other heavy duty equipment) are performed in compliance with Company safety and compliance standards, and with all federal and state regulations.
KNOWLEDGE
• Understanding of maintenance practices pertaining to heavy vehicles, trailers and various equipment specific to the solid waste industry
• Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings and manufacturer equipment manuals
• Understanding of the use of state of the art diagnostic equipment to locate and diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions
• Ability to repair or replace electrical wiring, circuits, fixtures and equipment including ignitions systems, lights and instrument panels
• Ability to properly operate voltmeters, ammeters and ohm meters
• Ability to inspect and repair brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings and other components of vehicles
SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Ability to identify and understand automotive terminology
• Ability to read and understand manuals, specifications, etc.
• Computer proficiency skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and database management systems
• Customer service skills
• Organizational and time management skills
• Ability and willingness to work any shift, holidays and weekends as required
• Ability to work in adverse conditions when necessary including outdoor foul weather and exposure to waste products.
EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 3 years maintenance experience
• A strong background in hands on maintenance work to include knowledge in
- Engines
- Transmissions
- Brakes
- Hydraulics
- Electrical
- Mechanical
SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE
• 2 to 3 years demonstrated experience in a supervisory capacity, leading or providing direction to others
EDUCATION
• Professional ASE certification(s), desired
JOB DUTIES
• Responsible for overseeing quality control for in-house repairs and making decisions about equipment, materials, and supply usage
• Responsible for direction and oversight of team of technicians (mechanics) over multiple shifts
• Responsible for directing, repairing, servicing and maintaining a variety of gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment to include motors, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and body components
• Responsible for diagnosing defects in automotive equipment and remedying the defects with approved methods
• Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives of other departments regarding repair and maintenance of vehicles
