The Arc of McLennan County in Waco, Texas, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to expanding opportunities, care, and support for persons and families impacted by intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Arc is looking for a Behavioral Specialist to oversee its after school and summer program for children (ages 5-22) with intellectual and developmental disabilities and its day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, The Opportunity Center. The preferred candidate must have or be able to obtain a Texas Childcare Center Director's Certificate and have experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors.
Responsibilities
- Develop and facilitate appropriate/quality curriculum and activities for the various programs
- Develop learning objectives for each client and measure/document progress
- Collect data on program effectiveness from parent satisfaction surveys
- Schedule and supervise program staff
- Create and manage an effective team environment
- Be a knowledgeable resource for program staff
- Communicate with the Executive Director regarding program needs and design
- Represent The Arc at Resource Fairs
- Attend ARD meetings upon request
- Submit weekly attendance and progress reports to the Office Manager in a timely manner
- Coordinate transportation for school pickup and field trips
- Ensure spending is within the program budget
- Provide orientation training to new employees and volunteers
- Ensure that the programs are in compliance with state standards
- Meet with state licensing inspectors for site visits
- Ensure that program staff meet their continuing education requirements
- Provide the Executive Director with needed client data for grants
- Attend required meetings
- Develop a good rapport with clients and their families
- Perform other duties assigned by the Executive Director
Skills
- Proven experience in working with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Proven experience in effectively managing program staff
- Knowledge of Texas Minimum Standards for Childcare Centers
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Knowledge of strategies for managing challenging behaviors
- General knowledge of special education guidelines
- Ability to safely drive a small bus
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team with a wide variety of individuals and organizations
- Attention to detail, data entry accuracy, and problem solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and planning skills in a fast-paced environment
- A creative mind with an ability to suggest improvements
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a relevant field from an accredited four-year college or university required; Texas Childcare Center Director's Certificate required.
