Overview
The In-Patient Psychiatrist is responsible to provide diagnostic assessment, treatment and crisis intervention for patients admitted to the inpatient units. This includes an initial psychiatric evaluation, mental status examination and diagnostic formulation, progress notes as per the departments recording standards, which describes patient observation, therapy rendered and course of treatment.
Responsibilities
- The psychiatrist provides diagnostic assessment for each patient through a psychiatric interview. The diagnostic assessment includes but is not limited to an assessment of risk of hurting self or others.
- Helps patients by evaluating medical and psychosocial conditions.
- Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of psychotropic medications.
- Monitors and evaluates treatment results. Develops treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
- Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effects of medications; and supervising staff provision of services.
- Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with internists, mental health therapists, creative arts therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
- Assures quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures, standards, rules, Office of Mental Health and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations requirements; and legal regulations; participating in utilization reviews; and remaining available for emergency consultations.
- Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
- Maintains historical records in the EMR by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events. Responsible for reviewing all medical record entries for assigned caseload.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
- Responsible to ensure that legal admission and retention documents are current and completed fully in compliance with the Mental Hygiene Law.
- May have unsupervised patient contact in the course of performing duties.
- May provide teaching and supervision of psychiatric residents.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Licensed and currently registered in New York State.
- The Psychiatrist will be credentialed as a member of the Medical Staff of Interfaith Medical Center.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficiency with Office PC's, Desktops, and Laptop software in addition to familiarity with Microsoft Office softwares to include Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
- Good interpersonal skills a must.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Position may require prolonged periods of standing, walking, talking, sitting, hearing, and bending throughout the work day.
- May include some repetitive motions.
