What are the responsibilities and job description for the OB LPN II / Scrub Technician position at the Chickasaw Nation?

General Description:
This position is with the Department of Health located at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center. The facility provides professional and clinical healthcare services to Native American beneficiaries of the following specialties: obstetric, nursery, and gynecology. The employee provides professional nursing services to these beneficiaries.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Executive Officer of Specialty & Nursing Services, Director of Inpatient Nursing and Senior Manager of Surgical and Obstetrical Services, with immediate supervision of the OB Manager. Routine work is performed independently following written procedures, standards and protocols. Work is reviewed for quality and adherence to policy. The LPN performs all assigned work in collaboration with a registered nurse.

Essential Job Functions:

  • NURSING FUNCTIONS:
  • Must have the ability to function in a fast paced area that includes the ability to multi task.
  • Assists in coordination with the transportation of patients to other healthcare facilities.
  • Adheres to departmental/hospital safety practices, policies and procedures, and unit practices based upon industry standards/requirements.
  • Demonstrates good telephone etiquette skills.
  • Must support the Baby Friendly Initiative 10 steps and Infant Feeding policy and procedure.
  • Plans and provides routine patient care by utilizing and documenting the nursing process; including teaching patients and their families, and discharge planning.
  • Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Transfers care as appropriate utilizing the SBAR system.
  • Delegates tasks as appropriate according to the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act.
  • Administers prescribed medications, IV fluids, and blood products according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Participates in hospital, departmental, and unit performance improvement activities to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
  • Plans and provides holistic patient care in a manner that ensures it is appropriate to patient’s needs, age, culture, and condition in conjunction with the plan of care.
  • Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by the reduction and control of environmental hazards and risks and the prevention of accidents and injuries.
  • Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution shills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • Provides a conducive learning atmosphere and clinical experience for students.
  • Executes the appropriate line of support when faced with ethical decision.
  • Executes emergency procedures related to the age and size of patient.
  • Utilizes opportunity to meet educations needs and maintains certifications, i.e. CPR, NRP, ACLS, and PCEP.
  • Is courteous to patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and maintains confidentiality, security, and integrity of data and information.
  • Maintains and promotes professionalism.
  • May serve as a preceptor for nursing students.
  • Recognizes and anticipates common changes in the physical, bio-psychosocial, and health education needs of female adult and female adolescent patient populations experiencing pregnancy related and non-pregnancy related conditions, acute medical and surgical gynecological conditions, post-partum conditions, and labor and delivery conditions.
  • Recognizes and anticipates common changes in the physical, bio-psychosocial, and health education needs of the neonate in both stable condition and those experiencing an acute medical condition.
  • Provide patient with safe, efficient, and timely preparation for surgery and patient education.
  • Assure complete documentation and that the surgical consent and H&P are signed, witnessed, and on the chart.
  • Assures that all ordered diagnostic test results are on the chart.
  • Demonstrates immediate post-op and/or postpartum management of patient and safe recovery from
  • Ensures discharge criteria are met and post-op education is given per physician.
  • Provides appropriate and safe nursing interventions, consistent with the scope of the job, in emergency situations experienced by female adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations for both pregnancy related and non-pregnancy related illnesses, medical and surgical gynecological patient population, labor and delivery patient population, post-partum patient population, and the newborn.
  • Collaborates with the RN to provide patient and/or family education for female adult and female adolescent patients or caregivers.
  • Collaborates with the RN to provide family education for the newborn caregivers.
  • Initiates IV therapy and medications as ordered.
  • SURGICAL STRUB TECHNICIAN FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides surgical scrub assistance in surgical deliveries and associated procedures performed within the facility.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub per AST/AORN/CDC guidelines.
  • Gowns and gloves self, surgeon, and assistants utilizing sterile technique.
  • Sets up sterile field with appropriate supplies, instruments, equipment, solutions, and medications as required for procedure utilizing sterile technique.
  • Labels all medications and solutions on and off sterile field utilizing standard practices.
  • Performs appropriate instrument and soft supply counts with the circulating RN prior to, during, and after every surgical procedure.
  • Prepares sterile drapes and assists surgeon with draping patient/sterile field.
  • Vigilantly observes surgeon and uses knowledge principles to anticipate what the surgeon will need next
  • Passes instruments, supplies, equipment, solutions, medications, etc. to surgeon during procedure utilizing appropriate technique and without delay.
  • Maintains highest standards of sterile technique before and during procedure.
  • Handles contaminated articles utilizing universal precautions.
  • Observes for breaks in sterile technique, calling them to the surgeon and circulator’s attention.
  • Handles/maintains surgical instruments and supplies in an appropriate fashion
  • Will assist with delegated patient care in labor & delivery that may include; assisting anesthesia staff with epidural/spinal/intrathecal placement and assisting the RN, CNM, and physician in vaginal deliveries. Will assist in assuring that the C-section operating room and labor & delivery rooms are stocked with required supplies needed for deliveries.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Required: Must be able to demonstrate impeccable sterile technique.
  • Required: Basic computer and keyboarding knowledge is required.
  • Required: Must have flexibility with working all shifts.
  • Required: Strong customer service skills.
  • Required: Experience in working with electronic health records.
  • Preferred: Must possess an extensive knowledge of aseptic principles, microbiology, and medical procedures sufficient to understand the ways diseases/infections are transmitted.
  • Preferred: Must possess the ability to identify and utilize a wide variety of surgical instruments, supplies, and other related equipment.

Education:

  • Required Technical School: Graduate of an approved school of practical nursing

Education Note:

Training and Experience:

  • Preferred: Experience 6 months - 3 years Two years nursing experience
  • Preferred: Experience 0 - 6 months Experience in the role of scrub tech is preferred

Licenses, Certifications, Other:

  • Required: Current and unrestricted Oklahoma LPN license
  • Required: must maintain current American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within one (1) month of hire, if not current.
  • Required: must maintain current American Heart Association ACLS certification or obtain within three (3) months of hire, if not current.
  • Required: must maintain current NRP certification or obtain within three (3) months of hire, if not current.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required: All nursing employees, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, transport staff, scrub techs and nursing assistants must be able to meet the following physical demands and will be exposed to elements described in the work environment requirements: work on the unit requires considerable standing, walking, bending, and stooping for extended periods of time. The individual may be required to lift/carry or push/pull objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds. Must possess the ability to cope with constant changes in a physically demanding, high-stress environment. Regular exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions is expected. Must possess the full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, hand and eye coordination. Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range. Working irregular hours.

Work Environment: Work is performed in the hospital and/or the ambulatory care environment. There is common exposure to contagious disease. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and/or emotionally disturbed patients, family members, or visitors.
