What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Clerk position at The City of Bettendorf?
Overview:
The Bettendorf Public Library Information Center seeks an energetic, flexible, courteous and diligent individual to join the Library’s team in providing premier front-line library services to the community of Bettendorf. This position is less than 19 hrs. per week scheduled days, evenings, and weekends.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision and according to procedures and policies, may function as support staff within the following Library divisions: Circulation, Youth Services, Adult/Information Services, and/or Technical Services, as assigned. Specific duties dependent on division assignment (below).
Responsibilities:
a) Performs general front-line patron services, such as: check-in and check-out library materials; assist patrons with self-check terminals and business machines; calculate and collect fines for overdue materials; patron registration, etc.
b) Assists library patrons with item retrieval, ready reference, readers’ advisory requests and general service questions. Refers reference questions to a Librarian on staff.
c) Assists in preparation of daily reserves/system holds process.
d) Operates the Library’s automated integrated library system (ILS), enters patron information to the ILS database and maintains online patron records and accounts.
e) Maintains division equipment, as assigned. Reports functionality issues to supervisor for assessment/repair.
f) Inspects returned materials for damages; shelves/shifts materials; reads shelves to maintain an organized collection of materials. Identifies damaged materials for repair and/or for withdrawal.
g) Provides general patron assistance at library service desks.
h) Plans, conducts and facilitates year-round preschool story time sessions under the guidance of the Youth Services Manager, as assigned.
i) Assists full time staff with implementation of programs and special projects, as assigned.
j) Assists with marketing activities and promotion of library services; creates displays and promotional materials under the guidance of the division head or supervisor.
k) Receives and processes materials, periodicals and newspapers for patron use; facilitates item record maintenance; performs general copy-cataloging, data entry, data maintenance, and various other operations utilizing the Library’s automated integrated library system (ILS).
l) Reports various statistics and usage patterns, as requested.
m) Performs these or other related job duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Experience: Requires 0-6 months of library-related experience, depending on division placement. Working knowledge of computers, common office technology, Microsoft Office, and various software products. Training or experience in early childhood development and/or knowledge of children’s literature preferred for Youth Services placement.
Interpersonal Skills: Requires excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with fellow co-workers, vendors, residents, professional colleagues, and the public.
Analytical Skills: Requires the analytical abilities necessary to effectively prioritize work assignments; assist patrons with questions and requests for information; solve basic operational issues and suggest solutions and refinement.
Technology Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and common office computer technologies is required. Knowledge of Envisionware PC Res and eCommerce, and Polaris ILS is preferred.
Working Conditions: Work is generally performed in a library/office environment. Frequent interruptions are possible. Requires ability speak, hear and see, with far vision at 20 feet or further and near vision at 20 inches or less. Continuous walking, standing, balancing, grasping, sitting, stooping, twisting, bending, climbing, and lifting; handling and shelving materials, including kneeling to reach floor-level shelving and reaching overhead. Pushing and pulling objects up to 80 lbs. on a wheeled cart; lifting library materials ranging from under one pound to twenty pounds. Physical condition commensurate with demands of the position. *Requires valid driver’s license and ability to drive an automobile.
