The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. In partnership with and co-located at The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school that prepares New York City’s most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with supports of The Door. Broome Street Academy serves 330 students annually in grades 9 - 12.
Working in a shared service environment, the Human Resources Generalist will work with The Door and Broome Street Academy, two independent 501c’s that share administrative/back-office functions.The Door (www.door.org), and Broome Street Academy (www.broomestreetacademy.org) are affiliated New York City nonprofits that tackle the complex issues surrounding poverty for over 50,000 New Yorkers each year.
The Person
We are looking for an experienced Generalist, who is a collaborator, problem-solver and will take an active interest in learning about the business/departments they support. This Generalist is curious about how to make processes better to enhance the employee experience. As a problem solver, they respond to challenges with the appropriate level of prioritization. They are self-motivated, communicative, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. They value equity, diversity, and inclusion, and champion these values within an organization’s culture. This person is nimble and can partner well with peers to develop solutions for our clients, while maintaining their sense of humor.
Responsibilities:
Employee Relations

Provide guidance on and directly handle employee relations matters with a focus on balancing business needs and organizational risk

Provide consultative expertise on employee relations matters ranging from basic to complex or high risk

Respond to and investigate employee complaints
-
Attend and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations
Recruitment:
-
Manage the ATS and provide user support and training to all internal users of the ATS in the use of features, functions, and recruitment processes; provide user support for external applications who have issues using the online application
- Provide guidance to hiring managers regarding salary recommendations using internal and external salary data and sourcing methodologies to improve effectiveness

Prepare monthly reports and analysis for senior leadership teams

In compliance with union hiring regulations, notify existing staff of current job openings by ensuring open positions are posted to the designated Union job board and agency website

Maintain current job descriptions collaborate with management regularly to ensure timely updates and obtain union approval as needed

Initiate and manage language differential tests for qualified candidates, as it pertains to any job requirements.
- Develop and deliver training modules to managers focused on areas related to staffing, recruitment, and retention
HR Expertise

Respond to routine human resource questions and/or direct to appropriate team member

Perform routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; recruitment, disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development

Conduct exit interviews and analyze feedback with the Managing Director, Human Resources

Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices

Work closely with the Program leadership, Managing Director regarding staff promotions and compensation changes that can impact compensation or benefits

Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law

Complete other tasks and special projects as assigned by Managing Director, Human Resources
Relationship Management

Handle employment-related inquiries from staff and supervisors, escalating complex and/or sensitive matters appropriately

Provide guidance to stakeholders utilizing problem-solving skills, coaching, and analytics with a consultative approach

Drive consensus and be results-oriented in a mission driven organization
Skills and Requirements:
-
At least two (2) years of progressive Human Resources and Generalist experience
- Minimum two(2) years of direct recruitment and staffing experience within a highly regulated field
-
Must be detail oriented and possess excellent communication, organizational and time management skills; must be able to prioritize and plan work schedule; must be a self-starter
- Must be professional and personable yet exercises sound judgment when dealing with sensitive and confidential matters
- Experience with Paycom software and Application Tracking Systems required
- Experience working with labor unions strongly preferred
- Proficient with MS Office programs, particularly Outlook, Excel, and Word
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment practices.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 35 hours per week with a hybrid work schedule.
