Who we are:
A 501 c3 non-profit organization founded in 2009, The Grassroot Project exists to advance health equity in cities by using sports to reimagine health education in middle schools and mobilizing NCAA athletes as health educators and role models for youth. Our team of staff, volunteers, community partners, educators and more believe in a world where health education is a priority, not an elective.
Our model capitalizes on the excitement, relatability, and popularity of sports to provide much-needed health education and health promotion programs to middle school youth. Our core programming includes 9-week, in-school programs in which we partner with P.E. and Health teachers to provide physically active, comprehensive health education. All students receive 1 program per year, over the course of 3 years: nutrition & physical activity (6th grade), sexual health (7th grade), and mental health promotion (8th grade). These programs are supplemented by family health education sessions and events that connect participants to other community service providers. In addition, we invest in the leadership training, cultural competency, and professional skills of hundreds of NCAA student-athletes who serve as our program facilitators each semester and ultimately move into their life after graduation with an unwavering commitment to health equity and social justice.
As The Grassroot Project grows in DC and begins expansion to Philadelphia, we are seeking to add a Program Manager who is passionate about health education and health equity. The ideal candidate will be nimble and eager to grow in a community based organization with a national growth vision. They will also be interested in leading a team to implement effective health education programs, reaching key performance indicators, and changing the health education landscape. Lastly, they will commit to prioritizing the Washington D.C. community and adapting program management to meet changing needs.
What you’ll do:
Program Manager(s) report directly to the Director of Programs & Operations and serve as integral members of the The Grassroot Project program team. As the organization continues to grow, and plans for new expansion, Program Managers in Washington, D.C. serve as the key managers of The Grassroot Project programming locally, while helping inform the replication of programs nationally. The Program Manager will provide overall leadership and management of The Grassroot Project programs, including school-based health education programs for approximately 1,500 youth per year in 15 middle schools; training and leadership development of volunteers, Grassroots Fam parent and caregiver programs, and Grassroots Connect health fairs. With the goal of implementing high-quality programs, the Program Manager will manage the collection of programmatic data, prepare programmatic progress reports, manage programmatic budgets, and continuously enhance the curricula used in schools. The Program Manager will maintain and develop relationships with all program-related stakeholders including teachers, school administrators, students, families, other CBOs, local health service providers, and the Office of State Superintendent of Education.
