HJF is seeking an Art Therapist to support the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Creative Forces located at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, WA. The Art Therapist will develop, implement, and evaluate an art therapy program for patients. Fosters positive and professional interpersonal relationships with patients/families, physicians, hospital staff, community representatives and visitors. Effectively uses interpersonal communication skills to promote a healing environment. 

 

The mission of the Creative Forces Network is to improve the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of trauma-exposed military service members and veterans, as well as their families and caregivers, by increasing knowledge of and access to clinical creative arts therapies and community arts engagement. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical care, community engagement and scholarly activity, while serving as an integral part of the interdisciplinary clinical team at the designated location as well as within the Creative Forces Network.
  • Provide clinical services on site and as directed via telehealth, including implementing treatment programs and professional casework for active duty military personnel, veterans and their eligible dependents designated to receive care by the Department of Defense (DoD) or Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and as specifically allowed under the Memorandum of Understanding between the site facility and the NEA.
  • Work with patients, families, and staff to understand the needs of the patient population from an art therapy perspective. Meet individual patients and families/caregivers to explain art therapy treatment. Assess individual and/or group needs, identify goals based on assessment, and develop treatment plans, as appropriate.
  • Work with clinical site leadership and staff, especially the interdisciplinary treatment team, develop and implement clinical programming comprised of art therapy interventions and clinical and psychoeducational content to address the unique needs of military-connected individuals and families.
  • Seek and develop opportunities to create connections between their designated clinical site and community arts organizations to enhance the desired clinic to community continuum. Participate in education, outreach and media activities as requested by the Military Medical Advisor.
  • Advance the collective understanding of the value and impact of the arts, with specific emphasis on art therapy evaluation and research. Engage with Creative Forces' Internal Program Evaluation staff to develop and implement a measurement plan for this work. Seek opportunities to educate and raise awareness of the role of creative arts therapists (CATs), including their contribution to improving the health and well-being of service members, and their families. 
  • Engage with the cadre of CATs within the Creative Forces Network to identify and share best practices, including through the development of content for the National Resources Center. Actively engage in both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration with the Network of CATs as active member of a community of practice to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality care, while supporting one another professionally.
  • Coordinate and work with the clinical site POC for day-to-day operations and to determine site specific requirements.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Art Therapy from an accredited Art Therapy program.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required.
  • Preferred to have a minimum of 2 years graduate level and/or post-graduate experience in a clinical setting, preferably working with military connected patients exposed to trauma, or similar populations.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and direct experience working with military and/or Veteran populations, including military connected families is desired.
  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to relate to diverse patient populations.
  • Sensitivity to individuals from varied backgrounds and cultures.
  • Competency with age-specific needs from childhood through young adulthood.

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • ATR-P, ATR, or ATR-BC through the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).

 

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting.
