Waukesha County's Department of Health & Human Services, Public Health Division - WIC Program is childcare setting is preferred.

This position will work an average of 20 hours a week, Monday - Friday with some flexibility in the hours. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred, with translation and interpretation experience desired. Must be willing to cross train for coverage in other areas of the WIC Clinic specific to client enrollment and providing client assistance.

Example of Duties

Under supervision of a Registered Dietitian, assesses infants, children, and pregnant and post-partum women for eligibility for WIC services; provides nutritional counseling and education; recommends appropriate diets to remediate nutritional and iron deficiencies which could lead to cognitive disabilities in the fetus and children; and performs other duties as required.


  • Determines eligibility of infants, children, and pregnant and post-partum women for WIC services through health and nutrition screening.
  • Identifies nutrition risks of participants and assists them through nutrition education and referral to appropriate community resources.
  • Performs height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements in accordance with WIC policy and procedures.
  • Provides counseling, education, and recommends appropriate diets to remediate nutritional deficiencies.
  • Develops individual care plans for clients to address identified risk factors through the analysis of subjective and objective data collected during nutrition assessments.
  • Assigns food prescriptions per program policy ad participant needs and issues their food benefit.
  • Promotes public health services to enhance continuity of care and foster cooperation with other community and health service agencies.
  • Receives and maintains current nutrition information and updates from the State WIC Office for education of clients.
  • Provides appropriate documentation of all assessments and education through the WIC computer program.
  • Provides breastfeeding assessment, education, and ongoing client support; promotes breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding.
  • Determines a breastfeeding mother's eligibility for a breast pump, provides training and follow-up on use.
  • Refers clients to a variety of health care, community service, and human service agencies.
  • Performs data entry into electronic medical records systems, data searches, reporting and other functions using various information systems.
  • Collaborates with public health nursing staff and other nutrition and health care providers to provide additional health screening and preventative care services.
  • Performs intake, answers phones, makes appointments, greets clients, and prepares paperwork as needed.
  • Attends WIC sponsored trainings and other related nutrition conferences and shares information with other staff.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relations with the staff, public health officials, human services providers, and a diverse cultural and socioeconomic client population.
  • Acts as a first responder in natural disasters or any public health, chemical, biological, nuclear, or radiological events, performing miscellaneous duties as assigned within the ICS/NIMS command structure.
  • Performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health nutrition and dietetics
  • Working knowledge of assessment principles and practices for determining nutrition risks.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations concerning the operation of the WIC program.
  • Working knowledge of computerized department program software, Internet access and database, spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Ability to determine nutritional risk factors for WIC clients and provide appropriate nutrition counseling.
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking skills to determine the interrelationship of identified risks with their root causes when developing a nutrition care plan for individual participants.
  • Ability to effectively explain the interrelationship of identified risks with their root causes when counseling families of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to learn and explain WIC policies and procedures as outlined in the WIC Operations Manual.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and reports according to guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff, public health officials, human services providers, and a diverse cultural and socioeconomic client population.
  • Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyles.
  • Ability to utilize word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
Minimum Qualifications

You must meet these minimum Training and Experience requirements:

  • Associate degree from a recognized Dietetic Technician Program.
  • Licensure or successful completion of licensure from the Commission on Dietetic Registration within six (6) months of employment.
