What are the responsibilities and job description for the Museum Registrar position at The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art?
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reporting to the Deputy Director for Art and Education, the Registrar is responsible for overseeing collections management, documentation, and care. The Registrar is a key team member for implementing the museum’s schedule of special exhibitions, collections installations, and acquisitions in collaboration with the rest of the Curatorial team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the preservation, conservation, housing, and maintenance of the museum collection, adhering to current museum standards and best practices.
- Develops, maintains, and implements collection management policies and procedures.
- Manages and executes collection inventory, database maintenance and data entry, keeping impeccable records of all objects.
- Processes all incoming and outgoing loans for both special exhibitions and the permanent collection.
- Processes and catalogs all incoming gifts in collaboration with the Curatorial staff.
- Provenance research.
- Facilitates the coordination and fabrication of display cases, object mounts and frames.
- Responsible for the rights and reproduction needs of the onsite artwork.
- Oversees and implements care, organization and maintenance of prep and collection storage areas according to professional museum standards.
- Manages the transportation of art including coordination of crates and shipping.
- Maintains fine arts insurance coverage and processes claims.
- Coordinates all photographic requirements for the permanent collection.
- Leads assessment of risk management, best practices, and executes ongoing care and maintenance of the art in times of emergency.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in museum registration and/or collections management
SKILLS:
- Knowledge and experience with museum quality art handling and storage
- Ability to take ownership of a project without direct supervision
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office
- Experience using collection management database systems
- Copyright law experience, preferred
- Need to be able to lift up to 30 lbs.
