Assist Director, Early Childhood Quality Improvement
The Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education (CTE) changes lives through knowledge that matters by designing, developing, and implementing learner-centered, technology-enhanced solutions to ensure equal access to education in classrooms and work settings across the globe. CTE is recruiting applicants for an Assistant Director for Early Childhood Quality Improvement. The primary function of this role is to provide leadership and management of the implementation of Maryland EXCELS, the state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System(QRIS). This includes management of the coordination of tasks and deliverables shared across various teams such as Technology, Professional Development, Research, and Outreach. This role is also responsible for direct management of a team of professionals who provide coaching and mentoring to child care providers who participate in Maryland EXCELS. The Assistant Director for Early Childhood Quality Improvement also has regular communication with the Maryland State Department of Education and with CTE leadership; this communication includes but is not limited to updates on deliverables and the scope of work, data and trends, and policy/procedural recommendations.
The successful candidate will have subject expertise on early childcare and education programs and have direct experience working in QRIS at the state or national level. Ideal candidates will also have first-hand experience of Maryland’s quality improvement initiatives and a deep understanding of the state’s early childhood landscape.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Subject Matter Expertise and Development - (75%)
- Daily management and support of QRIS Operations Specialist, QRIS Technology Liaison and Data Management Specialist, Maryland Accreditation Manager, Program Coordinator Managers and Program Coordinators; regular (at least weekly) communication with grant sponsor; regular (at least weekly) communication with CTE leadership; collaboration with other area directors and leads to ensure deliverables are completed, reflect best practices, and meet sponsor expectations; make data-informed recommendations and decisions based on data trends; general oversight of the QRIS system and implantation for the early childhood community across the state.
- Tracking grant deliverable due dates, communicating with sponsors, colleagues, and CTE leadership regarding grant implementation; providing consultation on policy/procedural recommendations related to grant deliverables and overall project goals.
- Lead and attend internal and external project management meetings related to grant deliverables, timelines, and goals.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
