What are the responsibilities and job description for the Investigator – Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) position at THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY?
The Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) of The Legal Aid Society is the largest post-conviction public defender in New York City, annually providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 1,000 people with misdemeanor, felony, and homicide convictions.
CAB has an opening for an investigator to work closely with appellate attorneys to assist indigent clients who are challenging their convictions on direct appeal and/or involved in a variety of other post-conviction matters. The investigator will be responsible for locating CAB clients, many of whom do not have stable housing. The investigator will also work on 440 motions and other post-conviction matters, locating and interviewing witnesses, drafting affidavits, and obtaining relevant evidence. There will likely be a particular focus on Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA) cases, which allow eligible survivors of domestic violence to seek resentencing but require corroborating evidence of the trauma they have experienced.
