In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs.The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Maintenance & Development Division (M&D) is the largest Division within this Department and is composed of five major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry (Roads & Grounds), Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (FMT, Heavy Equipment and ADA) and the Administrative section. The mission of M&D is to provide professional, high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.
This position is located in the Fleet Management section of the Maintenance & Development Division in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The position will work under general supervision, performing skilled mechanic work involving moderate responsibility, complexity and variety. Performs simple projects or assists on major projects to maintain and repair vehicles. May guide activities of Trades Trainees and Park/General Maintenance Workers. Work is checked by Lead and Senior Mechanics. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
- Receives work orders for mechanical projects. Test drives, inspects and repairs defects and causes of mechanical and other problems. May assist Senior Mechanics in diagnosing and troubleshooting type and extent of necessary repairs. Reviews technical manuals and materials to complete repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Maintains vehicles. Performs regular preventative maintenance on vehicles. Changes oil, filters and fluids and lubricates moving parts. Replaces or charges batteries. Inflates, balances, changes and rotates tires. Adjusts brakes and clutches. Tunes up engines.
- Makes minor repairs of cars, trucks and other equipment. Minor repairs includes repairing and replacing brakes, lights, horns, belts, hoses shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rods, mufflers, fuel pumps and other parts. Cleans and paints equipment. Replaces broken parts.
- Completes checklists and refers major repairs to Senior Mechanics. Assist Senior Mechanics with major repairs (e.g., transmissions, engines, electronic fuel systems).
- Assists with preparation and maintenance of records of expenditures, materials used, work time and tasks completed on each project.
- Drives vehicle to transport tools, equipment, materials, supplies and/or workers. Sets up equipment and tools for safe operation. Tows vehicles and equipment to Garage for maintenance and repairs.
- Loads and unloads tools, equipment, supplies and materials. Provides routine maintenance and repair of equipment.
- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Completion of an approved automotive/equipment mechanic apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical repair.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
- Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of employment.
- Pass Commission medical examination.

Salary : $37,549 - $66,500
