The Moran Company is pleased to partner with the Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition, Inc. (BHRC) in their search for a new Executive Director.

Background

Founded in 2011, BHRC is a community-based organization dedicated to mobilizing community members for the health, dignity, and safety of people targeted by the war on drugs and anti-sex worker policies. Advocating for harm reduction as part of a broader movement for social justice, BHRC implements public health services and advocates for policies to expand harm reduction in Baltimore and across the state of Maryland. BHRC has adopted an organizational structure that embraces a collaborative leadership model. In 2023, BHRC officially became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. 

Position Summary

BHRC is seeking an Executive Director who is passionate about harm reduction, public health, and social justice. They are looking for someone who is innovative, dedicated, and passionate and can lead the organization forward in delivering its mission. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and engage in a shared decision-making process that emphasizes collaboration and open dialogue with the staff and Board. This role requires a leader who can inspire and motivate a diverse team, manage day-to-day operations, develop and implement strategic plans, and represent BHRC in various forums. The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to harm reduction principles and a proven track record in facilitating a cooperative staff leadership model, collaborative programming, shared financial stewardship, and inclusive human resources practices. This reflects the organization’s commitment to a team-oriented work environment that values its staff and the community it serves.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership, ensuring alignment with the organization's harm reduction mission and values.
  • Develop and implement BHRC's overall strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and effectively manage organizational resources.
  • Lead, motivate, coach, develop, mentor, and retain a diverse team to achieve BHRC's goals.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent BHRC in various forums and collaborate with stakeholders to advance harm reduction initiatives.
  • Build and nurture relationships with government agencies, local community-based organizations, and other partners.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization, articulating its harm reduction mission and impact.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure financial support.
  • Manage budgets, financial reporting, and grant applications effectively.
  • Diversify revenue streams and cultivate donor relationships.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of BHRC's programs.
  • Identify emerging issues in harm reduction and opportunities for impactful interventions.
  • Ensure programmatic excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Engage with local communities to build awareness and support for harm reduction principles.
  • Facilitate educational initiatives and awareness campaigns.
  • Promote equity, inclusivity, and diversity within BHRC and its harm reduction initiatives.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Characteristics

  • A commitment to the principle and practice of harm reduction.
  • Proven track record of successful organizational leadership and team management.
  • Experience working with Board of Directors and cultivating healthy and collaborative relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate teams toward achieving common goals.
  • Familiarity with current trends, challenges, and emerging issues related to harm reduction.
  • Experience in developing and implementing fundraising strategies to secure financial support.
  • Proficient in financial management, budgeting, and grant application processes.
  • Proven ability to represent an organization in various forums and advocate for harm reduction initiatives.
  • Strong networking skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs or initiatives.
  • Ability to identify and capitalize on opportunities for innovative harm reduction interventions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate a compelling vision and mission to diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organization and its programs.

Baltimore & BHRC

BHRC is located in Baltimore, Maryland, a city known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and vibrant communities. In 2024, Baltimore was named by the New York Times as one of 52 Places to See in the World. The city is touted for its arts and food scene. Some of the dynamic offerings include AFRAM - a Black music and culture celebration festival, Artscape - the largest outdoor arts festival in the country, and Baltimore’s Black Arts District.

Compensation

This is a full-time, onsite position with a competitive salary and benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, and wellness weeks. The expected salary is $100,000.
