What are the responsibilities and job description for the Editor Analyst, The Ascent position at The Motley Fool?
Who are we?
We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial information and services firm with nearly 30 years of experience focused on making the world smarter, happier, and richer. But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our products and services.
The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer. However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"
What does this team do?
This role would be working directly with The Ascent's editorial team.
The Ascent, a Motley Fool brand launched in 2018, rates and reviews financial products, like credit cards, savings accounts, mortgage lenders, and stock brokerages, as well as provides jargon-free advice on topics ranging from how to get out of debt to choosing the best insurance for a rainy day.
There's some good (and a lot of bad) money advice out there, and we're cutting through the noise that often leaves people feeling helpless and insecure about these key financial decisions.
What would you do in this role?
The Ascent team is hiring an Editor Analyst to grow all elements of our editorial strategy with a focus on supporting the team's timely articles coverage.
This job is tailor-made for future Fools who are able to:
- Brainstorm timely article ideas and headlines with high traffic potential.
- Collaborate with a team of full-time employees and contractors to turn those ideas into high-quality content published on site.
- Dive into the data to understand traffic trends we'd want to scale up coverage behind and to understand conversion trends for better on-page optimization.
The stakes are high, the possibilities are endless, and you are hungry for GROWTH. Everything our team does is meant to grow our article volume and to expand our reach at the highest possible ROI.
But what does this role actually do?
- Work with The Ascent's editorial team to support our content strategy. You will play a role in defining relevant topics and then sourcing the writing to topical experts - contract writers and/or internal Fools.
- Support The Ascent's monthly editorial calendar and monitor the process that will source, edit, organize, and publish the content (potentially in multiple channels).
- Develop expertise in The Ascent's publishing business and continually learn about personal finance.
- Thoroughly understand who our competitors are and work tirelessly to generate better content. Whether it's presenting our message in text, audio, video, infographic, or smoke signal, our content's expression will be for you and others on the editorial team.
- Use Google Analytics and other home-built data dashboards to hone your operations. Understand how to spot an opportunity (or know when to walk away from one) based on what the data is telling you.
- Manage an array of fast-paced projects and be responsible for driving growth on new platforms and exploring new coverage areas.
What do you need to apply?
- 2-5 years' experience in digital publishing.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to recognize and help create great writing that puts the reader's needs first.
- A track record that demonstrates your capabilities in the digital publishing space. Don't skip the numbers and details here, go ahead and brag! We're excited to learn about your wins.
- A track record of personal growth. Tell us about a time when hard work took you from beginner to expert. We're activity-agnostic; it could be at the batting cage, calligraphy class, or your award-winning vegetable garden. We just want to know what drives you to achieve.
- Humility. We've thrown a lot of superlatives around here (the best content, the highest quality), and we talk an awful lot about our relentless pursuit to win. But we should be clear: Our strong opinions are paired with a slice of humble pie. We believe in the power of the team and the wisdom of many.
It’s even better if you have…
- Personal finance and investing experience.
- Direct experience working with a team of contractors.
- Experience creating an editorial calendar and supporting the editorial strategy.
- Comfort working with metrics, an ability to turn data into actionable programs, and an ability to optimize day-to-day article performance.
- Experience defining projects on a large scale, with the ability to consider multiple stakeholders (both internal and external).
- Knowledge of SEO best practices, website design, social media strategy, paid media campaigns, and conversion rate optimization.
- Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, Tableau, Airtable, Jira, Wagtail, and Wordpress.
- Interest in persuasive, direct-response marketing.
