What We Can Achieve Together
The Solomon Islands Program Manager develops, manages, and advances The Nature Conservancy’s terrestrial conservation program across Solomon Islands. The role brings scientific and technical capacity in the field of terrestrial environmental conservation to identify and address high priority threats to terrestrial ecosystems, and develops innovative scientific methods, tools, and frameworks – including nature-based solutions (NbS) such as carbon markets – to address the natural system needs. They build relationships with local communities and develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders to conserve and protect natural ecosystems in a complex and dynamic environment.
This is intended to be a full-time, fixed term (three year) position, with the possibility for extension subject to funding and meeting project outcomes. The position reports to the Solomon Islands Country Director and is based in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

The Program Manager works within the Solomon Islands Conservation Leadership Team to deliver impactful terrestrial conservation under The Nature Conservancy Solomon Islands Strategic Plan. They use the best available information to prioritise terrestrial ecosystems for protection, including through facilitation of Ridges to Reefs conservation planning. They collaborate with local, regional, and global teams within The Nature Conservancy to design and implement conservation projects across these priority ecosystems in close partnership with government agencies, major institutions, community-based organisations, and landowners. The Program Manager manages projects employing nature-based solutions (NbS) including carbon feasibility and design in Solomon Islands.

Essential Functions
- Works within the Solomon Islands Leadership Team to design and implement diverse projects, encompassing multiple programs of work to meet The Nature Conservancy Solomon Islands Strategic Plan.
- Coordinate the implementation of complex terrestrial conservation projects, including projects employing nature-based solutions (NbS).
- In partnership with regional and global colleagues, manage a project team to undertake feasibility assessment for a potential carbon project including:
- Science & Methodology: define project boundary; identify applicable methodologies, design and implement sampling plan for baseline and carbon abatement potential
- Project Governance: coordinate consultation process with local communities and provincial and national government in target project area to identify options for project governance structure
- Policy Analysis: work with Solomon Islands Government to review, and advance regulatory environment for development of carbon projects in Solomon Islands
- Works with TNC Gender and Equity team to ensure that Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) are central during all stages of the project cycle.
- Develop and maintain close partnerships with key local stakeholders to accomplish program goals.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- May involve domestic and international travel of 30% or more.
- BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of climate mitigation and adaptation issues.
- Experience incorporating Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) into project design and implementation.
- Experience collecting and interpreting scientific data and other information to inform conservation and climate change mitigation decision making.
- Experience working with partners such as government agencies, non-profits, and the corporate sector.
- Proficient in written, spoken, and graphical communication in English and Solomon Islands Pidgin. Experienced in report preparation and negotiation of complex agreements.
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated – particularly in Solomon Islands languages and cultures
- 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
