Teacher Assigned – Inclusive and Adapted Physical Education Instructional Specialist
Teaching students to take care of their minds and their bodies builds a foundation for lifelong learning and ensures they have the skills needed to be physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally healthy. The New York City Department of Education’s Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) supports school communities in building strong structures and rich environments where Health Education and Physical Education (PE) thrive, and guides schools in teaching nearly one million students what they need to know to make healthy, informed choices now and throughout their lives.
Recognizing that every student has a right to quality PE and Health Education instruction, as well as opportunities to engage in wellness-related activities inside and outside of the classroom, we believe:
The Inclusive and Adapted Physical Education Instructional Specialist supports the Director of Physical Education in the development and dissemination of professional learning and resources that support schools citywide to provide developmentally appropriate physical education programs and learning experienced for students with disabilities. The specialist works directly with central offices, district and school administrators, physical education teachers, IEP team members, related service providers and support staff citywide to increase understandings and implementation of physical education requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 and NYSED regulations. Additional responsibilities include staying current with trends in instructional technology to support students with disabilities, deep understanding of SESIS and IEP procedures as well as standardized assessments protocols in adapted physical education for students age 3-21.
