The Sergeant will plan, direct and coordinate activities relating to the protection, safeguarding and security of NYRA assets, employees, guests and others by the uniform force. In addition, the Sergeant will assist the Lieutenant on duty in supervising the work of the uniform force; when Lieutenant is absent, assume their duties.
Responsibilities:
Essential functions of the Sergeant include but are not limited to the following:
Provide direct supervision to the Uniform force ensuring that law enforcement activities are conducted in a lawful and efficient manner.- Monitor all accountable equipment and ensures the upkeep and maintenance of all equipment issued to uniform officers.
- Supervise the routine care, maintenance and appearance of NYRA vehicles assigned to the Uniform force.
- Ensure that prescribed uniform and associated equipment are worn/displayed properly by all members under his/her supervision.
- Maintain direct contact with subordinates in the field conducting periodic inspections of personnel assigned to him/her as well as the security posts and general condition of the facility.
- Exercise independent judgment in carrying out overall responsibilities and other actives as assigned.
- Instruct uniform members under supervision in the correct discharge of their duties.
- Issue oral or written orders to members under supervision to achieve maximum efficiency provided to ensure that there are no conflicts with any orders previously issued by superior authority or NYRA rules, regulations or established policies.
- Confer with the Uniform Lieutenant to coordinate plans for the most efficient and economical ways to operate and control the varied duties of the Uniform force.
- Interview Uniform Lieutenant to discuss and formulate plans for the most efficient and economical ways to operate and control the varied duties of the Uniform force.
- Maintain records for the accurate evaluation of Uniform members under his/her command and prepares performance evaluations.
- Investigate complaints against personnel as assigned by the Uniform lieutenant, reporting to the Chief of Security.
- Conduct inspections of personnel under their command and NYRA facilities as directed by the Lieutenant Uniform.
- Coordinate with uniform members to promote uniformity, understanding of purpose and efficiency in all phases of operations.
- Proceed immediately to the scene of any serious crime, incident or accident on NYRA property and supervises an investigation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Captain, Lieutenant, Chief of Security, Investigations or the Director of Security.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or the equivalent;
- 8 to 10 years of experience in law enforcement or security;
- N.Y.S Certified Peace Officer;
- Supervisory experience;
- Ability to work all tours as assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends and to work at both Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Park;
- Strong verbal and written communications;
- Strong organizational and administrative skills; leadership and delegation abilities; problem-solving skills;
- Ability to exercise independent judgment;
- Attention to detail.
