Position Summary
Assists the Early Childhood and School Age Development Director in the preparation, general supervision and management of the children participating in the Afterschool Program. Assists the Riverbrook Regional YMCA in meeting the needs of the community and our youth members.

Essential Functions
- Plan and implement activities for the day for children in grades Kindergarten-6 with the goals and policies of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with children, staff, parents, and Early Childhood and School Age Development Director.
- Speak to the students in a positive and supportive manner.
- Supervise and participate with the children throughout the day.
- Attend all staff meetings and recommended training programs.
- Maintain a professional attitude, following the philosophy of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA and modeling the Character Values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility and Honesty.
- Ensure the well-being and safety (mental, physical, emotion and cyber) of each child during their scheduled time in the Afterschool Program.
- Promote confidence and enthusiasm throughout the day.
- Speak to children in a positive and encouraging manner.
- Effectively communicate issues with parents and directors on a daily basis.
- Complete feedback forms at the end of each day.
- Maintain quality of the program (i.e. managing supplies, equipment and general housekeeping in classroom.)
- Be responsible for appearance of the classroom as well as setting up and breaking down furniture and maintaining supplies and equipment.
- Maintain confidentiality with regards to personnel as well as personal issues.
- Understand all of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA policies as presented in the Employee Handbook as well as the Afterschool Handbook.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Early Childhood and School Age Development Director.
- Maintain the 10:1 ratio at all times.
- For your own protection as well as for the protection of the children, there should always be two staff present when a single child is there. Never be in an enclosed area alone with children.
- Follow and implement all HEPA policies and standards in all YMCA programs.
- Maintain a quality Afterschool Program that reflects a positive image of the Riverbrook Regional YMCA and its services to the community (i.e. managing supplies, equipment and general housekeeping in classroom.)
- Adheres to policies and procedures related to boundaries with youth, managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
- Completes all required organizational trainings annually.
- Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Job responsibilities include access to protected health information. The employee may access protected health information (PHI) only to the extent that it is necessary for job requirements. May only share PHI with those who have a need to know specific member/participant/employee information in order to complete job responsibilities related to the individual’s participation, payment or company operations. Is expected to complete required HIPAA privacy training and maintain HIPAA compliance at all times.
- The Counselor- Afterschool has access to protected health information (PHI) of Y program participants. The Counselor- Afterschool may use and disclose PHI to workforce members for the purpose of treatment, payment and operations only.
- Actively participates in and upholds the YMCA’s mission to be open and accessible to everyone, regardless of financial situation or special need. Contributes time to raise funds for this worthy and necessary endeavor by supporting the Y’s Annual Giving and Capital Development campaigns.
- QUALIFICATIONS:
- The candidate must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have experience supervising children.
- Possesses excellent communication, conflict resolution and human relations.
- Has sufficient visual and auditory acuity to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner during activity.
