Job Summary:
Leads the human resources function for all employees, lay and ordained, of The Riverside Church. This highly collaborative role functions as a key member of the Senior Leadership Cabinet of The Riverside Church and is responsible for defining, developing, managing and implementing a combination of tactical and strategic human resources initiatives aligned with The Riverside Church’s requirements. Responsible for the recommendation, interpretation and enforcement of HR practices and policies. Provide HR leadership, organizational design, talent management support and direction regarding all human resources strategies.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the recruitment process for all full-time, part-time, temporary and consultant open positions. Include behavior based interviewing and training for all hiring managers.
- Manage the vendors who provide a range of services (medical and financial benefits, employee training and development, etc.)
- Coordinate risk management with respect to human resources issues, including workers compensation, liability prevention and occupational health and safety. Direct and coordinate initiatives to maintain a healthy and safe workplace.
- Ensure that all new employees have received orientation and training for their respective assignments; coordinate staff development/training programs.
- Lead the development and implementation of Human Resources policies, procedures and practices; ensure the appropriate communication to all employees on said policies and procedures with core common and consistent practices utilized.
- Develop and/or direct supervisory and staff training courses and seminars as well as coordinate staff participation in professional development experiences.
- Serve as the Church’s EEO Officer; direct and maintain the Church’s commitment to equal employment opportunities.
- Provides leadership development opportunities by providing coaching and feedback to all managers of people
- Oversee Payroll process in coordination with HR Generalist and outside firm.
- Ensure that personnel actions are appropriately processed and personnel records, both written and electronically prepared, are properly maintained and safeguarded.
- Serve as one of the Church’s representatives in labor disputes and as an arbiter in internal conflicts and grievances.
- Develop, maintain and ensure the use of updated job descriptions for all positions.
- Develop, maintain and ensure the use of annual performance reviews; ensure annual performance reviews are used for employee development programs.
- Develop and/or direct various institutional-enhancement programs including but not limited to Conflict Resolution, Drug-Free Workplace, Sexual Harassment, Conflict of Interest, Anti-Discrimination/Defamation.
- Serve as staff liaison to the Personnel & Salary Committee.
- Ensure compliance with The Riverside Church Employee Manual and oversee its revisions in cooperation with the Personnel and Salary Committee.
- Oversee the performance and activities of the HR Generalist, HR Administrative Assistant, and HR Interns.
Experience and Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Social Services or other business related fields required. Master’s degree preferred.
- 10 years of professional experience in Human Resources with change management expertise
- 5 years in supervisory capacity
- Thorough knowledge of human resources policies, procedures, performance management, employee relations, organizational design, workforce management and leadership development
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local HR laws, regulations and policies.
- Demonstrated ability to build business relationships and effectively interact with all levels of employees.
- Ability to set vision and strategy by ensuring human resources goals are aligned with Church’s goals.
- Must be able to deal constructively with conflict and developing consensus.
- Experience with the non-profit sector and religious institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to administer employment policies, planning and monitoring budgets
- Demonstrated ability to work with discretion within a confidential environment
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines
- Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills required
- Proficient in MSOffice, ADP Workforce Now, LMS and other HRIS systems.
