The Rudder, an iconic restaurant and bar since the 1950s, is seeking full-time General Manager. Combining the fine food and attentive hospitality of Chef Barbara Lynch, The Rudder offers a rotating menu highlighting Gloucester’s local seafood and French/Italian cuisine.
The General Manager is responsible for the overall health and success of The Rudder’s staff, products, service and hospitality, guest and industry relations, facilities, and financials. They are a steward of The Rudder’s vision and direction, ensuring The Rudder’s alignment with the Barbara Lynch Collective brand, culture, and values; guiding, encouraging, and advocating for changes as needed. The Rudder is seeking an eager hospitality and guest relations enthusiast for an General Manager position. This individual will be an integral part of the FOH Management team. He or she will execute the requirements of their position in accordance with and under the supervision of Chef Barbara and the Operations team.
Essential Duties:
- Hire, train, develop, and retain top talent
- Work with Finance Director to set budgetary goals; ensure profitability and viability of The
Rudder business model
- In collaboration with Chef/Owner and Finance Director, ensure job descriptions are
maintained and updated for all staff positions and that the positions are aligned with
operations
- Ensure opening, side, and closing duties are delineated and posted for each position for
accountability
- Organize and communicate continued education training calendar
- Work 5 days per week, including closing shifts as required.
- Community & Industry Planning
- Ensure liquor, beer and wine inventories are physically counted on the first of each month and
submitted to Finance by the communicated month end deadline.
- Ensure all invoices are reviewed for accuracy [ what is when invoice is actually received ] and
signed off for accountability before submitting to finance.
- Ensure weekly schedule is communicated to staff to include in times and out times. Ensure schedule has been
built to optimize payroll. Schedules must be retained for three years.
- Work with the Senior Team to ensure compliance with new hire, compensation,
performance review, disciplinary, investigative, termination, benefits, workers comp,
OSHA, and COVID-19 procedures.
- Work with Chef Barbara Lynch to ensure menu quality, consistency, and alignment with the
cocktail program.
- Ensure facilities are working in proper condition in accordance with Board of Health, OSHA,
and Workers Comp guidelines

Education / Experience: TIPS certification, CPR certification, Crowd Certification, minimum 3 years in
restaurant management with direct report experience.
