Summary/Primary Purpose: The Divisional Director of Capital Campaigns will support the Senior Director of Philanthropy and Executive Director of Development in coordinating all aspects of capital campaign management and reporting in the Western Division (Nebraska, Iowa, & South Dakota) of The Salvation Army. As an important part of the development team, the Divisional Director of Capital Campaigns will execute the Development Department's strategic plan with capital-needs leadership from Salvation Army Divisional and Corps leadership to diversify, strengthen, and increase the capital funding base including developing new sources of funding for capital campaigns across the Division. They are responsible for campaign strategy including establishing solicitation priorities, managing prospect lists, developing, and executing targeted cultivation plans and solicitation strategies for a range of projects; preparing, and providing support to staff, board members, and volunteers for solicitation, planning, and managing cultivation, and appreciation events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Consult with divisional leadership and Corps Officers on capital needs and planning.
  2. Ability to work with and influence leadership across multiple departments (Development, Property, Social Services, etc.)
  3. Work with multiple departments at multiple levels simultaneously.
  4. Cultivates relationships with Corps Officers, staff, and donors by conducting oneself in a professional manner.
  5. Manage donor visits and solicitations alone and with pertinent Salvation Army and volunteer leadership. Potential capital campaign donors will include influential individuals/families, corporations, and foundations.
  6. Manage high touch relationships between Salvation Army leadership and key prospects and donors through fundraising and recognition events.
  7. Manage grant processes for capital needs, to include both writing and reporting with the support of other Development and Social Services staff.
  8. Responsible for acknowledgement of all capital campaign gifts and pledges, and preparation of pledge payment reminders and agreements with major gift donors.
  9. Manage capital campaign record keeping and progress toward goals with exceptionally high attention to detail.
  10. Identify and cultivate relationships with potential capital campaign steering committee members and work with local Corps Officers to build effective, high-level, working capital campaign committee(s).
  11. Advance various levels of feasibility studies and campaigns simultaneously.
  12. Work with approved outside counsel on campaign strategy, timeline, and goals.
  13. Clearly communicate Territorial and Divisional decisions to Corps Officers and campaign leadership.
  14. Hold Salvation Army staff and volunteers accountable to campaign timelines.
  15. Prepare and present reports to Corps Officers, Divisional and Territorial leadership and regularly report to the Divisional Finance Board.
  16. Collaborates with all Development staff throughout the Western Division to ensure Corps fundraising efforts are recognized, celebrated, and learned from.
  17. Works closely with Development team, pursuing and contributing to harmonious collaboration between direct marketing, social media, foundation, corporation, and planned giving staff for optimal integrated strategies regarding major donor communications, as well as overall department initiatives.
  18. Ensures excellent donor service is provided through accessibility to staff and leadership (as granted), timely responsiveness, quality in all interactions, and personalized communications.
  19. This position may travel to attend advisory board/committee meetings, campaign events, and conferences that may take place outside of normal working hours, to include evenings and weekends.
  20. Driving is an essential function of the position.
  21. All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business, or related field and/or 5 years successful experience in managing fundraising programs, including supervisory experience; direct experience with capital fundraising projects is preferred.

  2. Excellent communication skills both written and spoken.
  3. Ability to listen, recognize opportunities and understand what is important to donors.
  4. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers, and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and clients; respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers, and supervisors.
  5. Flexible and strong organization skills for establishing priorities, managing multiple projects or tasks simultaneously, as well as creative problem solving and team building skills.
  6. Must be a highly skilled self-starter, manage important projects, and maintain focus from beginning to end.
  7. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, SalesForce CRM and the ability to access data systems via a web-based system.
  8. Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, and attention to details and filing.
  9. Mathematical skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, use of common percentages, fractions, and decimals.
  10. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters.
  11. Strong independent judgement.

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Travel: Travel is expected, and more than 30% of time may be spent on the road, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment. May need to climb, balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 20 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions: This is a typical office environment and while performing the duties of this job, the noise level is usually moderate.
