JOB TITLE: DIRECTOR OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES

The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Director of Volunteer Services for the Orlando Area Command, located in Orlando, FL. This is an exempt, Full-Time position. The pay range is $45,089 - $50,720.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Development, develops, implements, and monitors the operational and strategic plans for the Volunteer Resource Program based on continuous assessment of program needs for Area Command. Facilitates community volunteer involvement in order to support The Salvation Army programs. Serves as a consultant for the Metropolitan Area Command Corps, Shelters, and other departments in developing and utilizing volunteer resources. Represents the agency at community informational and volunteer/resource recruitment events.

About This Opportunity
Knowledge or general office practices and principles. Knowledge of social service practices and principles. Ability to interview clients in order to evaluate and serve their needs. Ability to determine client eligibility for program assistance based on specific program guidelines and restrictions. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with the public and community agencies. Ability to prepare accurate and complete client records, reports, and statistics.

Consults with program staff to collect data related to volunteer needs of all programs within Area Command. Develops and implements procedures for effective use of volunteers in programs and monitors volunteer participation for effectiveness. Consults with staff to develop appropriate volunteer position descriptions; develops a comprehensive volunteer manual and revises as necessary. Develops a marketing plan for volunteer recruitment and produces appropriate educational and informational material. Recruits, background screens as necessary, orients, places, evaluates and recognizes volunteers to ensure competent volunteer staff to enhance programs; terminates volunteers when appropriate. Arranges for all necessary volunteer training. Maintains roster of local disaster volunteers and canteen drivers; works with Disaster Program and helps to deploy volunteers for local emergencies and assists in recruiting and deploying volunteers for emergencies elsewhere. Trains staff to work effectively with volunteers. Prepares training materials for volunteers and staff. Provides a significant volunteer support team for the Thanksgiving community meals, recruits, and schedules. Provides volunteer support for the Christmas programs, Registration, Kettles, Angel Tree, & Distribution including but not limited to:

  • Participates in operational planning for application process, mall operation, donation handling and distribution.
  • Recruits, schedules, and prepares training materials for all volunteers at malls and warehouse.
  • Works with the Angel Tree Coordinator for the staffing of the malls.
  • Prepares and develops with assistance of the Public Relations Coordinator informational materials for the public.
  • Supervises capture of attendance data and its transfer to volunteer database for 1,000 volunteers involved during the program.
  • Solicits and recruits a large volunteer base for our Red Kettle Campaign.
  • Responsible for the distribution and collection of Stockings to the volunteer “stuffers” for the Christmas Program.
  • Responsible for the collection and distribution of the Teddy Bears for the Christmas Program
Maintains the volunteer resource database with comprehensive files for all volunteers. Plans appropriate volunteer recognition. Maintains appropriate statistical reports for monthly reporting. Prepares annual report regarding the status of volunteer resources. Cultivates and maintains contacts with corporate, civic, religious groups and churches, schools & colleges in order to educate the public about Salvation Army programs and recruit volunteers and donors. Plans and produces visual aids with the assistance of the Public Relations Coordinator for community presentations; conducts facility tours. Under the direction of the Director of Development, serves as a member of the Development Team in any way that is helpful including special events, promotions, donor engagement, etc. Leads all volunteers to do their work in accordance with The Salvation Army mission, priorities, and goals.

What we are looking for in you:
Bachelor’s degree in business management or a related field AND two years supervisory experience OR any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications
Approved background check required. Volunteer management training or certification. Valid Florida State Driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing, walking, or driving. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) Most work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, etc. Work may involve driving a vehicle to special events or to supervise volunteers at locations throughout the community, where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or commuting in heavy traffic. Work schedule may be erratic or in excess of 40 hours per week due to seasonal programs, special events or disaster or emergency situations.
