Job Description
Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a Server Engineer - Intermediate for our IT Technology Services - Hyde Park Department. This is a remote, work from home opportunity and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Server Engineer – Intermediate to join our IT team. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in designing, implementing, and supporting Windows-based server environments. As a Server Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the stability, scalability, and security of our Windows server infrastructure while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional services to our clients.
Essential Job Functions
Windows Server Management:
- Design and Implementation: Lead the design and deployment of Windows Server environments, including physical and virtual infrastructures, ensuring adherence to best practices and industry standards.
- Server Administration: Perform advanced configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Windows servers, ensuring optimal performance, resource utilization, and system availability.
- Security and Compliance: Implement and enforce security measures, update patches, and perform vulnerability assessments to safeguard the Windows server infrastructure. Ensure compliance with industry standards and company policies.
- Capacity Planning: Monitor server capacity, performance, and resource utilization to anticipate and resolve potential bottlenecks or issues proactively. Recommend appropriate upgrades or expansions to meet future requirements.
- Backup and Disaster Recovery: Implement and maintain backup strategies and disaster recovery solutions to ensure data integrity and minimal downtime in case of system failures.
- Troubleshooting: Investigate and resolve complex server-related issues, collaborating with other teams, such as network administrators and application developers, to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
- Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including server configurations, processes, and procedures to ensure efficient knowledge sharing and consistency within the team.
Citrix Administration:
- Understanding of XenApp 7.15, Storefront 7.15, Netscaler, Provisioning Services (PVS), User Profile Management (UPM) for 18,000 customers, RemotePC
- Upgrades, migrations, and patching to all Citrix hosts in dev/test/prd/dr environments
- Citrix support tickets from customers via service now
- Application updates in Citrix for MS Office, clinical applications, Epic Hyperspace/Hyperdrive
Professional development:
- Attend appropriate training & professional development conferences to ensure that the Systems Administrator skill set continues to meet customer demands.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Windows Server Engineer or a similar role in managing Windows Server infrastructures
- Strong expertise in Windows Server operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2019, 2016) and Active Directory administration
- In-depth knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V
- Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automation and system management
- Experience with server monitoring and management tools (e.g., SCCM, SCOM)
- Knowledge of network protocols, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and other related technologies
- Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery solutions for Windows environments
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to handle critical incidents effectively
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams
- Industry certifications such as MCSE, MCSA, or VCP will be a plus
Experience with one of the following required:
Windows administration
- Skilled and experienced with Windows of some variety: Windows 2012/2016/2019 server OS
- High skill with most of Windows 2012/2016/2019 Server and Workstation commands/utilities.
- Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes.
- Ability to write and understand scripts in some administrative language (powershell)
AND/OR
Citrix administration
