This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work. Purpose To provide journeyman skills for the fabrication, installation, operation, and routine or equipment in outside plant facilities. Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of fiber-optics and/or copper cable equipment in outside plant facilities. Fabricates, installs, operates and performs routine or emergency maintenance and/or repair of fiber-optics and/or copper cable in outside plant facilities. Splices copper and/or fiber-optic cable, terminates to terminal blocks and maintains air pressure in underground cable. Performs journey level work in a particular area of expertise as assigned. May perform related duties as assigned. Responsibilities Installation and splicing of copper cables. Installation and splicing of fiber optic cables. Testing and troubleshooting copper. Testing and troubleshooting fiber optic cable. Repair and maintenance of copper cables. Repair and maintenance of fiber optic cable. Maintenance and repair of cable air pressure. Assist and work as a team member with other ITS and construction groups. This position will require driving a UT vehicle to site locations to carry out these duties. Other related functions as assigned. Required Qualifications High school graduation or GED. At least two years of experience in splicing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing fiber optic cable. Four years of experience in the installation and/or repair of fiber-optic cable and other related telecommunications equipment. Ability to distinguish the difference between colors. Experience in installation of OSP cables and construction methods. Industry recognized certification in splicing and testing copper and fiber optic cable. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Six or more years of experience of journey level cable splicing, troubleshooting, repairing and testing fiber optic and copper cable. Over five years of experience in a campus environment. Confined space training. Experience with large projects, cable transfers. Strong troubleshooting skills. Driving Required This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a university owned vehicle.
