Job Posting Title: Research Associate ---- Hiring Department: Department of Astronomy ---- Position Open To: All Applicants ---- Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40 ---- FLSA Status: Exempt ---- Earliest Start Date: Sep 01, 2022 ---- Position Duration: Expected to Continue Until Jan 31, 2024 ---- Location: UT MAIN CAMPUS ---- Job Details: General Notes The position is expected to continue through 1/31/2024, with the possibility of continuation depending on business needs, performance, and the availability of funding. Purpose The Research Associate will carry out research related to exoplanet and brown dwarf atmospheres, including the development of tools for model-data comparisons, data analysis, and spectroscopy. Responsibilities Conduct research in Astronomy according to specific area of interest. To publish research findings and present them in scientific meetings. Domestic and international travel may be required. Collaborate with other researchers on projects. Provide guidance/assistance on related projects to other members of the research team. Other related functions as assigned. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Astronomy or related field Extensive knowledge of spectroscopy of brown dwarfs, exoplanets, and stars Research experience in the field of exoplanets, brown dwarfs, and/or star Excellent written and oral communication skills Attention to detail, effective problem-solving skills, and excellent judgment. Research experience developing open-source software for scientific research Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Previous research experience in any of the following areas: planetary systems or stars Four years postdoctoral experience in the field of exoplanets, brown dwarfs, and/or stars Significant experience mentoring undergraduate students Salary Range $76,000 Working Conditions Work in an academic research environment. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Occasional overnight observations may be scheduled according to project needs. Required Materials CV Minimum of three letters of reference, at least two of which must be from referees outside of The University of Texas at Austin. (Hiring PI/supervisor cannot be a reference.)
