Department

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has rapidly transformed into one of the premier chemistry programs in the state of Texas during the past decade with internationally renowned faculty and transdisciplinary scholars who are committed to defining the frontiers of the chemical sciences. Our faculty enjoy fruitful collaborations with colleagues at our partnering institutions here in San Antonio including UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), and Texas Biomedical Research Institute (TBRI). The Department consists of 19 tenure/tenure-track faculty members and offers undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry and graduate (MS and PhD) degrees in Chemistry, including a doctoral degree in Chemistry with an emphasis on Biochemistry. The Center for Innovative Drug Discovery (), a collaboration with UT Health at San Antonio, working in concert with the Preclinical Pharmacology Core for Accelerated Drug Discovery, are operational linkages that facilitate discoveries. In addition, Department of Chemistry faculty have opportunities to be involved in multiple centers and institutes along with access to world class user facilities.
  • State-of-the art for high-throughput screening, medicinal chemistry, preclinical pharmacology, cell image analysis, biochemical signaling, genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and pluripotent stem cell derivation and gene editing are available.
  • The UTSA (RSGC) provides access to high-performance computing (HPC) architecture for researchers on campus and facilitates use of the Texas Advanced Computing Center.
  • The newly established is a joint initiative from the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrative Design and the College of Sciences in conjunction with multiple entities throughout the San Antonio community combining academic, clinical, military, and biotechnological expertise to address grand challenges in regenerative medicine.
  • The (BHC) was established in 2019 as a university level center/institute with over 40 participating scientists working together to advance our basic understanding of the brain. The BHC promotes and supports cutting-edge, transdisciplinary, and collaborative research and connects basic and translational research.
  • The within the College of Sciences is a campus-wide community of researchers at UTSA engaged in discovering the neural bases of experience, behavior, and disease.
  • The (KAMC) core is open access facility that provides state-of-the-art technology in electron microscopy and advanced material characterization to support world-class research in nanotechnology, biology, chemistry, and materials sciences.

Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Sciences (COS) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for the Rita and John Feik Distinguished University Chair in Medicinal Chemistry starting in Fall 2024. This is a tenured position contingent on approval by the UT Board of Regents. We seek individuals with a strong track record in medicinal or organic chemistry, especially those with research expertise in the areas of cancer, infectious diseases, or neurological disorders, who will further enhance the visibility of the department and university. Candidates will also be expected to synergize and benefit from the current drug discovery ecosystem that exist in San Antonio and across the state of Texas. The position is expected to be a senior level position (Full Professor) but outstanding applicants at the Associated Professor level are also encouraged to apply. Qualifications

Candidates must have national visibility with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and proven ability to direct an extramurally funded research program. The successful candidate will be required to teach courses in their field of expertise within or outside the department and must demonstrate their ability to work and be sensitive to the educational needs of diverse urban populations and support the University's commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success.
