The Town of Garner is seeking a Planning Technician to join our growing team to provide critical assistance and support to the Development Review section of the Planning Department. This position will work closely with the general public, property owners, builders, real estate agents, developers, and others who inquire about residential setbacks and buffering requirements, ensuring residential UDO and code provisions are known, understood and applied by the general public.
This position qualifies for a $3,000 hiring bonus!
- Reviews residential building permits for compliance with the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), performs related inspections, and manages all related correspondence;
- Maintains assigned databases along with related paper and electronic files;
- Serves as primary front counter assistance to Planning Department customers;
- Assigned to Planning Department’s primary phone number and ensures all calls are answered and directed to the appropriate personnel;
- Cross-trains with Development & Permit Specialists in the Inspections Department and assists as needed;
- Responds to questions from citizens regarding residential setbacks and buffering requirements, ensuring residential UDO and code provisions are known, understood and applied by the general public;
- Maintains project files as assigned;
- Provides administrative support to the Board of Adjustment in the form of agenda packet preparation, packet distribution and the taking and transcription of Board minutes;
- Ensures routine maintenance of any assigned Town vehicle(s);
- Manages the requisition of supplies and materials for the department;
- Attends evening meetings as required; and
- Performs related tasks as required.
- have prior related administrative and/or technical support experience, preferably in a government planning, community development, engineering, or inspections department or in a private-sector contract engineering, landscape architecture or related firm
- have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and 2 years of related work experience OR an Associate's Degree with major course work in administration, planning, social sciences, or related field.
- have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- be available to attend all Board of Adjustment meetings (see Additional Information below for meeting schedule)
- have demonstrated excellent customer service skills
- have demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, including spelling and grammar
- possess a valid driver's license
Prior planning experience is desired but not required.
Prior experience preparing and distributing meeting agendas and preparing meeting minutes for a board, committee, commission, council, etc. is preferred.
