The Horticulture Manager is responsible for general oversight of grounds, horticulture education, volunteers, and plant records. They will have a deep understanding through accumulated experience and education of appropriate horticultural practices for the intermountain area and be able to develop planting plans that highlight low-water/wildlife attracting/native landscapes. The Horticulture Manager will play an important role in developing the future planting plans for the Jordan River Nature Center. Possesses drive to educate and inspire peers, volunteers, and interns through problem solving, creativity of design, and organization.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain Tracy Aviary and Jordan River Nature Center plants, trees, shrubs, and gardens by use of appropriate pruning, planting, transplanting, propagation, irrigation and IPM.
- Assist in the development of planting plans and their implementation at both the Tracy Aviary Liberty Park campus and the Jordan River Nature Center campus.
- Organize and coordinate horticulture staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Outreach to guests, community partners, and other Aviary departments.
- Plant knowledge, specifically in the areas of wildlife attracting, low water use, and regionally appropriate natives.
- Knowledge of interiorscape and annual plantings.
- Work within the Operations Leadership Team to address problems or emergencies.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field from an accredited university or college is strongly preferred. Experience is also considered. Experience developing planting plans in low water/native/wildlife attracting landscapes required. Ability to lead a team of horticulture staff and volunteers required. A Utah Pesticide Applicators License is required within 3 months.
Typical work week is Sunday – Thursday. This is a full-time, benefited position. $20.00 -23.00/hour depending on experience.
