POSITION SUMMARY  
The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring accurate clinical documentation within Trajectory RCS, an outsourced revenue cycle management company. Working remotely, the CDI Specialist collaborates directly with healthcare providers and coders to capture precise diagnoses for coding and compliance purposes. A clinical background, preferably as a registered nurse or advanced nurse practitioner, is required for this role.

This remote position offers the opportunity to contribute to the accuracy of clinical documentation while supporting coding and compliance efforts within a fast growth revenue cycle management company. The CDI Specialist is passionate about optimizing healthcare documentation and ensuring quality patient care.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to accurately capture and document patient diagnoses in medical records.
  • Review clinical documentation to ensure it reflects the severity of illness and risk of mortality.
  • Educate and train providers on documentation best practices to support accurate coding and compliance.
  • Work closely with providers to concurrently clarify clinical documentation queries and resolve discrepancies.
  • Conduct concurrent audits on all inpatient admissions to assess documentation quality and identify areas for improvement.
  • Stay updated on coding guidelines, regulations, and industry trends to ensure compliance.
  • Provide support during coding and billing processes to ensure accurate reimbursement and revenue integrity.
  • Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to streamline documentation workflows and enhance efficiency.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
  • Candidates will have a minimum of three years’ progressive Clinical Documentation Improvement experience within a provider-based or outsource environment, with preference given to those coming from a fast paced, high growth company. 
  • A solid foundation will exist from a clinical background as a registered nurse, advanced nurse practitioner or a physician assistant.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, disease processes, and clinical documentation requirements.
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS) and compliance regulations.
  • Experience and success in a CDI role in both surgical and medical cases. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with healthcare providers and coding staff.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to analyze complex medical records and identify documentation deficiencies.
  • Proficiency in remote communication tools and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards in healthcare documentation.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning to stay abreast of industry trends and emerging best practices.
  • Multilocation experience and the ability to thrive on complexity are necessary.
  • Strong subject matter expertise in Cerner is an enhancement to candidacy.

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSN, RN Degree, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, PA
  • CDIS certification strongly preferred
