Class Title: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
EEOC: Technicians
FLSA: Non Exempt
Summary of Position
Operates and maintains the District’s wastewater treatment facilities, and trains utility technicians and trainees in plant operations and maintenance and TCEQ’s licensing requirements.
Organizational Relationships
1. Reports to Supervisor Wastewater Operations
2. Directs: Provides training to utility technicians and trainees, if any.
3. Other: Has contact with other employees, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and with the general public.
Examples of Work
1. Operates and maintains the District wastewater treatment facilities as required by city, state, and federal guidelines are met.
2. Performs periodic tests on wastewater treatment facility pumps, motors, and wastewater; and takes appropriate readings of gauges and meters.
3. Records lift station information from lift stations and maintains records of wastewater treatment facility operations.
4. Performs routine inspections of wastewater treatment facilities, visually monitors pumps, tanks, chemicals, and filters, and adjusts equipment and chemicals to maintain specified operating conditions.
5. Performs various chemical analyses, including pH, C.O.D., dissolved oxygen, and chlorine tests, and ensures proper calibration of measuring equipment.
6. Calculates various daily, weekly, and monthly chemical usage and wastewater statistics, and records data on logs and charts.
7. Ensures cleanliness of wastewater facilities and cleans equipment as necessary.
8. Performs corrective and preventive maintenance of wastewater treatment equipment.
9. Prepares reports to state and federal regulatory agencies as required.
10. Maintains and repairs lift stations, collection systems, and water distribution systems as required.
11. Reads, records, installs, repairs, and maintains District water meters and wastewater meters.
12. Monitors wastewater system status using System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
13. Works with the Maintenance Supervisor to ensure that all pumps, valves, motors, and equipment are properly maintained.

Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in wastewater treatment facilities; plumbing; welding; minor electrical repair; basic chemistry; pumps and motors; wastewater chemical analyzing equipment; city, state, and federal wastewater treatment specifications and regulations; and laboratory testing and procedures.
Skill/Ability to: train other personnel; learn and comply with state and federal regulations applicable to wastewater treatment facilities; perform simple mathematical calculations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; and maintain appropriate necessary certifications. May be required to work in confined spaces such as manholes, wet wells, etc. May be required to be on a 24-hour call.
Acceptable Experience and Training
High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus at least four years of experience in wastewater treatment operations.
Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Class “C”, or higher, Wastewater Certification from the TCEQ.
Texas driver's license.
