OFFICIAL TITLE:Center for Initial Screening and Assessment/Assessment Specialist WORKING TITLE:Assessment Specialist WORK YEAR: 12 months REPORTS TO:Registrar, Family Registration Center The Assessment Specialist will manage, organize, and plan all initial screenings and assessments for new student registrations for New Bedford Public Schools, any other necessary English language assessments of current students (preschool students going into Kindergarten and private schools), and maintain reports of all screenings and assessments. The Assessment Specialist will also coordinate with the Kindergarten Specialist in the planning, scheduling, and implementation of Kindergarten screening and registration and coordinate the rescreening of Kindergarten students in school buildings as needed. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: 1.Minimum three years experience in a school or registration setting. 2.Trained and competent in all WIDA Initial English Language Proficiency Assessments. 3.Trained and competent in all utilized preschool English Language Proficiency Assessments (pre-IPT and preLAS). 4.Trained and competent in all utilized Early Childhood initial screenings (ESI-K and Battelle). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1.Minimum of Bachelor's Degree. 2.Licensed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (preferred) 3.SEI Endorsement OR Licensed as an ESL Educator by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. 4.A demonstrated belief that each and every student can achieve at high levels. 5.A demonstrated dedication to lifelong learning, reflection, and continued personal and professional growth. 6.Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 7.Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative teamwork skills. 8.Bilingual in Spanish or multilingual and bicultural strongly recommended. *Such alternatives to the above as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) include sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods, reaching, fine manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend work OVERTIME ELIGIBLE: NO CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requirements: Administrator KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge: Lived experience to inform engagement with families from different countries and cultures as well as enhance registration and enrollment procedures in the Family Registration Center Skills: Experienced and proficient in facilitating trainings regarding initial English language proficiency assessments, screenings, and the Home Language Survey; proficient in administering Literacy and Numeracy assessments and student and family interviews for SLIFE Abilities: Attention to detail and ability to evaluate and refine processes and procedures to streamline and systematize registration and initial assessments EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Working with the Family Registration Center and Early Childhood Office to schedule and administer necessary assessments and screenings •Working with the Registrar to ensure students are enrolled into New Bedford Public Schools in a timely manner, and to make appropriate placement decisions regarding English Learners, Newcomers, and SLIFE •Supporting the Family Registration Center with new student registrations •Collaborating and coordinating with other schools, agencies, organizations, and programs for enrollment and placement •Scheduling teachers and screeners as necessary to administer assessments and screenings •Referring students to the Special Education Office as necessary for further evaluation •Notifying principals and special education facilitators in each elementary school every fall regarding which Kindergarten students were recommended to have further evaluations administered due to their performance during the Kindergarten screenings •Publicizing Dual Language Education throughout Kindergarten registration •Providing support and information to parents/guardians regarding assessments and screenings •Ensuring that data and information regarding assessments and screenings is properly and accurately entered into ASPEN, and that records are kept of all assessments and screenings •Using data effectively for tracking and monitoring purposes, providing reports when requested to NBPS administrators •Demonstrating knowledge of current assessments and screenings that document language proficiency and child development, and attending workshops and professional development to remain current regarding assessments and screenings •Attending all meetings as required by DESE and/or NBPS EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent or designee accordance with the MA state Administrator evaluation requirements TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work Year: 12 months Salary Range: $48,000- $50,000 This description may be changed at any time
