Position Title
Programming Specialist

Job Responsibilities
The McNair Programming Specialist leads all recruitment and programming efforts during the academic year and summer. This includes identifying and connecting with McNair-eligible undergraduates from Truman’s population of first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented minority students; and engaging participants in academic year and summer services and activities designed to meet McNair Program objectives.

Program Outreach & Recruitment
  • Lead the administrative staff’s creation and implementation of the annual outreach plan for communicating information about McNair opportunities and events as well as Scholar accomplishments via social media, the campus e-newsletter Truman Today, the McNair website, and other outlets
  • Lead annual Program outreach activities for the purposes of Scholar recruitment:
  • schedule, organize, and participate in McNair recruitment events, including on some weekend days, in collaboration with other Truman offices and programs
  • send recruitment information to McNair-eligible students and campus community members
  • implement the annual Program application review, interview, and selection process
  • Lead development and maintenance of all recruitment areas of the McNair website
  • Complete relevant purchases related to annual recruitment and outreach activities and maintain organized and accurate budget records in compliance with federal and Truman policies
Student Staff Supervision
  • Become a Certified Peer Educator Trainer through the professional association NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and lead Certified Peer Educator training for all Student staff
  • Supervise all Student staff who work as Peer Mentors for the purpose of (1) recruitment in the Pre-McNair Fellows Program and/or (2) program engagement and community-building among fellow McNair Scholars
Academic Year & Summer Programming
  • Create and share all information about program events and activities as well as track Scholar participation in all programming for the purpose of recordkeeping and annual reporting to the U.S. Department of Education
  • Work with the McNair Administrative Coordinator to gather and analyze data about McNair Program events and activities outcomes as well as relevant institutional and national data on student engagement and success, especially for McNair-eligible undergraduate populations
  • Complete relevant purchases related to programming processes and maintain organized and accurate budget records in compliance with federal and Truman policies
Professional Development and Other Duties
  • Maintain positive relationships with various constituencies on and off campus for the purposes of recruitment and programming
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in paper and electronic files in compliance with federal regulations and Truman policies
  • Keep current about legislation, regulations, and current events that impact TRIO projects
  • Prepare and participate in regular administrative and student staff meetings
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of the McNair Program as a welcoming place for all students, staff, and faculty during all academic year and summer work by living out the mission and values of the Program
  • Attend professional development events on and off campus
  • Complete other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS:
  • Must be able to provide written and verbal instructions to staff and scholars as needed;
  • Must be knowledgeable of and able to use computer applications and education software (e.g. Microsoft office Suite including Excel, Access, Word and Blackboard);
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Missouri driver’s license and pass the University van-driving test;
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups on a daily basis; and
  • Must be able to work responsibly with sensitive and confidential information and records
PERSONAL INTERACTION
Frequent contact is made with all levels of University personnel, students, prospective students and their families, and with graduate programs nationally in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The McNair Programming Specialist will supervise all Student staff involved in recruitment and programming

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or related field; or
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience with demonstrated progress in areas of increased responsibility in higher education student advising, engagement, teaching, or related areas.


Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • experience with grant-funded and/or TRIO or similar programs;
  • ability to relate to TRIO-eligible students from diverse backgrounds, especially regarding the opportunities and barriers they navigate in higher education;
  • ability to facilitate students’ understanding and use of effective strategies for making progress toward degree completion in undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a strong, positive, mission-focused team; and
  • demonstrated ability to use superior communication, interpersonal, and organization skills, especially in response to rapidly changing student needs.
