Thunderbird Partnership Foundation is a Non-profit that supports a variety of initiatives that advocate for First Nations culturally based substance use and mental wellness services. Thunderbird’s vision is to cultivate and empower relationships that connect us to our cultural strengths and identity within wholistic and healthy communities. Thunderbird is a leading authority on Indigenous addictions and mental wellness research. We offer a variety of resources (guidebooks, toolkits, fact sheets, Thunderbird Wellness app, training curriculum) to support First Nations in their community planning. We offer training (self-directed and virtual) grounded in Indigenous Knowledge to National Native Alcohol & Drug Addiction Program (NNADAP) and National Youth Solvent Abuse Program (NYSAP) treatment centre workers and First Nations community wellness workers, to support special skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with First Nations communities.
We are currently looking to fill the position of Trainer. This is a full-time, in office position. Our head office is located in South Western Ontario.
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Training and Education Manager, and as part of the training/education team and various work groups, the trainer facilitates the articulation and delivery of curriculum and instructional training strategies that are consistent with the mission and vision of Thunderbird Partnership Foundation.
The Trainer will be responsible for the delivery of Thunderbird Partnership Foundation’s accredited training curriculum for the National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation and its stakeholders including but not limited to First Nations communities and workforce. This highly skilled professional will provide training that supports application of the Indigenous culturally-based addictions treatment and mental wellness services and programs for First Nations as identified in the Honouring Our Strengths: A Renewed Framework to Address Substance Use Issues and the First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework. The trainer
role includes translating training course subject matter utilizing learner centered processes and working with the training and education team to support on-going curriculum updating and development.
Responsibilities
The trainer performs the following essential services within the framework of the Thunderbird Partnership Foundations core policies, functions and for the provision of essential services to its partners and stakeholders.
- Delivers curriculum complete with materials, tutorials, instructions, and learning resources such as online modules and guides.
- Ensures training methodology and delivery is compatible with culturally-relevant training curriculum.
- Training Strategies/methods - implements a variety of adult centered teaching strategies and best practices that help learners remain engaged and meet or exceed learning outcomes.
- Facilitation Skills: implements diverse teaching techniques that engages learners to support their professional needs.
- Identifies culturally relevant resources and materials that will support instructional practices that facilitate engagement of various learning styles.
- Ensures the evaluation of training course delivery and tracking for monitoring, reporting, and continuous quality improvement.
- Designs, prepares and sources relevant educational aids and materials.
- Assesses instructional effectiveness through course evaluations to determine the impact of training on stakeholder skills.
- Partners with internal stakeholders and liaises with experts regarding instructional design.
- Utilizes and updates curriculum database and training records.
- Uses known education principles and stay up to date on new training methods and techniques.
- Researches and recommends new training methods.
- Works cooperatively with the training/education team in development and delivery of instructional materials and curriculum in all subject areas.
- Works collaboratively with the training /education team to maintain quality assurance standards and consistency of training curriculum resources and training delivery methodology and evaluation.
- Provides all required information for the training reports to stakeholders and assists in the development and writing of the reports.
- Supports the development and delivery strategy for dissemination of outputs and knowledge exchange.
Training and Development Services
- Communicates with the Training/Education Team and other Thunderbird Partnership Foundation staff to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of training courses, programs and services.
- Represents the Thunderbird Partnership Foundation at events as directed by the Training and Education Manager.
- Ensures that training program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization and that they comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards.
- Uses effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Assists in communicating with community treatment partners and other stakeholders to gain community support for the training program and to solicits input to improve the program.
- Develops and nurtures relationships with stakeholders.
- Provides updates and reports (verbal and written) to the organization and the Training and Education Manager as required.
- Attends staff, Working Groups and departmental meetings as necessary.
- Other Duties as Assigned.
Information Technology and Data
- Advises on appropriate technology that meets the Thunderbird Partnership Foundation and stakeholders training requirements.

Administrative Services and Control
- Monitors content for accuracy and ensures that training complies with confidentiality policies and privacy regulations.
- Writes reports on the training program as required for management, partners/stakeholders and for funders.
- Monitors and reports evaluation findings to the Training and Education Manager and recommends changes to enhance training delivery as appropriate.
- Supports and operates within Thunderbird’s finance system and follows financial procedures relating to expenses and procurement.
- Ensures compliance with safe and confidential protocols if accessing research projects.

- Develops and implements a personal and professional development plan targeted at core competencies to ensure continued growth and development of responsibility.

Minimum Experience Required
- Minimum of Two(2) Years of related experience preferably in Indigenous/First Nations community setting
- Hands-on experience managing multiple training/education events and environments
- Experience in education
- Knowledge of protocols and ethical practices relating to working with First Nations
- Knowledge of various methods of teaching and instruction
- Cultural Competence and ability to interact effectively particularly within First Nation
communities/societies
- Knowledge of First Nations traditions and customs including natural healing is considered an asset
- Adequate knowledge of learning management systems and web/digital delivery tools

Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Indigenous Studies, Public Safety Social Work and/or
related discipline
