What are the responsibilities and job description for the Divisional IT Manager position at UCLA?

Under the general supervision of the Director of PS-ITS, the incumbent is to serve as the lead technologist for the Division of Physical Sciences, consisting of six academic departments and multiple institutes. Incumbent is to serve as the technical director of the Science Learning Center, supporting both Physical and Life Sciences divisions. In collaboration with the Director of Physical Sciences IT Services (PS-ITS) and with input from the Division Dean and Assistant Dean, incumbent is to develop both long- and short-term strategic vision for the divisional networking and computing operations. Incumbent is to create, implement and update divisional IT policies for resource management, appropriate usage and technical support as well as provide technical direction and support to the Division IT managers and staff.

Incumbent is to plan, design, pilot, implement, and support divisional networking and server/workstation deployments as well as select, license, configure, and deploy commercial discipline-specific software for Life and Physical Sciences. Other duties will include selecting, configuring, and deploying suitable open-source software, direct implementation and ongoing improvement of websites for the division and related units, overseeing support of the instructional course websites hosted on campus LMS in coordination with departmental support units, functioning as a Senior System Administrator, providing direct support for computing operations in a complex heterogeneous computing environment, and representing the division on the technical campus IT committees. In collaboration with the Director of PS-ITS, incumbent is to develop and implement a coherent and appropriate cyber security policy for the division which aligns with the research, instructional, and administrative requirements and existing campus security policy.

9. Demonstrated skill in systems analysis. Ability to translate broadly defined problems into manageable network and computer solutions, establish benchmarks, identify problems, recommend and implement solutions.

10. Detailed knowledge of modern network architectures. Expert level knowledge of Cisco CatOS and IOS. Demonstrated knowledge of computer networking protocols such as IPv4/IPv6, TCP, UDP, ARP. Knowledge of routing protocols OSPF and BGP4. Detailed knowledge of name and address space management. Expert level knowledge of network and system monitoring via SNMP.

11. Deep and profound expert knowledge of all aspects of Linux/UNIX and Windows systems, including, hardware integration, virtualization, system programming, system configuration and maintenance. Expert knowledge of common file systems, such as NFS, CIFS, ZFS, and XFS. Detailed knowledge of modern authentication and authorization platforms such as OpenLDAP, MIT Kerberos, RADIUS, and Active Directory. Detailed knowledge of modern scale deployment methods based on platforms such as Ansible.

12. Detailed knowledge of Open-Source software, and a demonstrated commitment to its use in educational and research computing environments.

13. Ability to program in standard system administrative languages such as UNIX/Linux shells, Python and Perl, as well competency in at least one scientific programming language, like FORTRAN or C.

14. Working knowledge of HPC systems, GP GPU systems, and cluster technologies and related programming techniques.

15. Detailed knowledge of LAMP/LAPP web architecture, and ability to integrate software packages and communications standards within it. Knowledge of at least one common web CMS platform, like Wordpress or Drupal.

16. Demonstrated ability to in collect, organize and analyze large volumes of data, identify trends, and formulate logical and meaningful conclusions.

17. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends, and to be responsive in emergencies.

18. Degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, or Computer Science, or equivalent experience/training.
