Overview
The Monitor/EMU Tech continuously monitors EKG rhythms. The monitor tech is responsible for recognizing dysrhythmias. The monitor tech is to immediately notify the nurse of pertinent changes in the patient's heart rate and rhythm. The monitor tech is responsible for producing rhythm strips for telemetry patients. The monitor tech inventories and maintains equipment for both the main monitor bank and individual patient units. The monitor tech continuously observes all patients on EMU therapy, recognizes different types of seizure activity, and documents it accordingly. The monitor tech notifies the RN of any seizure activity and maintains EMU equipment in EMU room.
Qualifications
Required Education:
GED or High School Diploma
Specific course work: Monitor Technicians must successfully complete an EKG/Dysrhythmia course within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Education
PCA, Medic Corpsman, or a nursing student having completed the first clinical rotation successfully
Necessary Skills
Within 6 months of hire, must attend unit-based courses relative to specialized area.
Required Experience
Less than one year of related experience
Preferred Experience
One year or more working in a health care environment as a monitor technician

Necessary Skills
- Basic medical terminology.
- Knowledge of standard precautions, recognizing obvious job related emergencies.
- An awareness of ethical and legal responsibilities as they relate to the job.
- Ability to read EKG arrhythmias.
- Demonstrates the essential knowledge necessary to effectively monitor patients for seizure activity connected to an Epilepsy Monitor (EMU)
