What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Underwriter - Field position at UFG?
UFG is looking for a Production Underwriter - Field to join the team who will be responsible for writing profitable business for the company, building and maintaining strong working relationships with the agency force, and evaluating new submissions for acceptability within underwriting parameters. This role will work to achieve a $1 million - $3 million growth goal, continually assess growth trajectory and profitability of agents in their territory.
This is a remote opportunity and the individual must reside within the San Diego, CA metro area.
Responsibilities:
- Underwrite and price new business.
- Evaluate risk and coverages by reviewing applications, MVR’s, Experience Mods, loss experience, loss control reports, and product brochures for risk acceptability.
- Develop, analyze, and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks.
- May be responsible for maintaining a renewal book of business of approximately $1 million in premium.
- Solicit new business and develop a pipeline to source submissions.
- Review applications, endorsement requests, and renewals for limits and coverages requested.
- Actively gather information to determine risk acceptability. Select critical information, review daily claims sheet, and work with marketing to monitor production and loss ratio for each agency.
- Demonstrate creative problem solving in the evaluation of acceptance/placement of risk within the existing portfolio.
- Price risks and negotiate to ensure that risk is properly classed. Place risk in proper program, review renewals, work with agents and CSRs to obtain a saleable program for the agent/insured while avoiding adverse selection.
- Achieve production goals within assign territory
- Responsible for marketing and territory prospecting to include regular visits to agencies and insureds, aiding agents in placing new accounts, and quoting additional coverages.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Risk Control, and other internal partners.
- Complete agency reviews and recommend coverages and rate changes. Provide feedback to management on the current state of the marketplace, agencies, and competition. Prospect territory looking for new agency appointments.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required; four-year college degree preferred.
- Completion of General Insurance designation (AINS) preferred.
- Completion of or working toward AU, CIC, and/or CPCU designation(s).
Experience:
- 5 years commercial lines underwriting experience required.
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Strong risk evaluation skills and good common- sense judgement required

Working Conditions:
- General office conditions on some days.
- Travel required, some overnight. On average, 1-3 days per week on average.
